HUNTINGTON — Huntington High’s offensive line was a road-grader and Parkersburg’s defense was the gravel drive.
The Highlanders (5-1) bullied the Big Reds (3-4) in a 35-3 victory Friday night in high school football at Bob Sang Stadium.
Senior quarterback Tayveon Wilson ran six times for 89 yards and completed 7 of 9 passes for 138 yards, leading Huntington High in both categories. Wilson also spent much of halftime on the field, as he was named homecoming king, alongside queen Alexis Davis.
“I’m not a real fan of homecoming wherever I’ve been,” Highlanders coach Billy Seals said. “I’m just not. I feel like our kids can handle that, though, especially Tayveon, with him being a senior. I thought it was important for him to be out here for that.”
Huntington High served notice of what kind of night it would be on its second possession, driving 94 yards in 16 plays, 12 on the ground. Antonyo Paschall capped the trek with a 2-yard touchdown run, followed by Bennett Weimer’s extra point for a 7-0 lead at 10:28 of the second quarter.

The Highlanders showed quick-strike capability on their next possession. Wilson completed a 14-yard pass to Donte Newsome, then sprinted 69 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead 3:23 before halftime.
Parkersburg avoided a shutout with a 31-yard field goal by Cole Sisk as time expired in the second quarter.
“I thought our first half was not our best half of football,” Seals said. “We didn’t play very well. Some of that had to do with Parkersburg. We didn’t play with any energy. We didn’t practice real well this week and that showed in the first half tonight.”
That changed in the second half. Huntington High drove 72 yards in nine plays before Wilson tossed a 27-yard scoring strike to Andreas Reese with 2:40 left in the third quarter for a 21-3 advantage.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Mayshaun Okwonko, who carried four times for 50 yards, weaved through the Big Reds defense for a 33-yard touchdown run. A Newsome interception set up an eight-play, 84-yard drive that ended with Travon Okwonko scoring on a 2-yard plunge. Travon Okwonko finished with 81 yards on 16 attempts.
Parkersburg coach Matt Kimes said he was impressed with the Highlanders, third in the Class AAAA WVSSAC ratings entering the game.
“That’s a really good football team,” Kimes said. “They have a lot of great athletes. They do a good job up front.”
Third down was a bugaboo for Parkersburg, which was led by Alex Greer’s 84 yards passing and 61 rushing. Huntington High converted 7 of 8 third-down opportunities. The Big Reds were 5 of 10 on third down.
“We have to finish drives and be more consistent,” Kimes said. “We need to be more consistent on first and second downs and move the chains.”
Both teams return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Huntington High visits George Washington, 6-0 heading into Saturday’s home game with Jefferson. The Big Reds are home to Cabell Midland (1-5).
