Big Red girls force tie against University

PARKERSBURG — Coming off of a three-game win streak and a 3-1 win over Buckhannon-Upshur, the Parkersburg girls hosted University Tuesday night, a night in which a combination of both rain and both teams’ pure determination to win culminated in a 1-1 tie to bring the Big Reds’ record to 11-4-2 and the Hawks’ to 11-3-3.

The match began on a slow front with a 26-minute game of back and forth between the two teams, before eventually resulting in a free kick from Big Red Reagan Ashley that went straight to fellow Big Red Malaya Bowling for a goal to make the score 1-0.

The Big Reds’ lead would be a short lived one, with an unassisted goal from University’s Ava Gizzi flying right through Big Red goalkeeper Skylar Newlon’s hands to even the score at 1-1 with 13 minutes to go in the first half of play.

“We’ve worked on a lot this year, but some things still need tuned up,” said Parkersburg coach Jarric Hoskins. “They’ve gotten a lot better at a lot but also have a great deal to improve upon.”

Possession of the ball proved to be a power-struggle in the second half with the Big Reds attempting three shots on goal while defending against the Hawks’ two, both falling short to force any lead changes and ending the game in a tie between two of West Virginia’s best.

“We played hard and so did the other team, which definitely showed on the scoreboard,” said Hoskins. “It’s not a loss, but I think there is a lot we left on the field tonight.”

The Big Reds will travel to face Morgantown Thursday at 6 p.m., while University travels to face Fairmont Senior Saturday at 9 a.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
