Williamstown’s Madilyn Buttrey runner-up at Junior Match Play event
VIENNA – Williamstown golfer Madilyn Buttrey gave Bridgeport’s Audrey Kerr everything she could ask for and then some during the championship match of Sunday’s WVGA Junior Match Play Championship at Parkersburg Country Club.
After receiving a bye as the No. 2 seed, Buttrey defeated St. Marys’ McKenzie Armstrong 5 and 4 in Saturday’s semifinal match. In the finals, Buttrey met Kerr, who also earned a bye as the No. 1 seed before defeating Charleston’s Lexi Green 6 and 4 in a second semifinal match.
During Sunday morning’s championship match, Buttrey built a five-hole advantage after eight holes before Kerr reeled off three straight wins to close the deficit to two holes.
Buttrey extended the lead back to three holes with three remaining before Kerr rallied by winning the final three holes in regulation and clinching the win on hole No. 19.
