Parkersburg has strong showing at MSAC track

CHARLESTON — Parkersburg’s boys came up a little short of champion Huntington, 144-129, here Friday at Laidley Field in the Mountain State Athletic Conference championship meet while the Big Red girls amassed 102 points to finish in third behind the Highlanders (176) and Cabell Midland (142).

The red and white boys picked up a quartet of gold medals thanks to Landen Deuley in the 400 (49.93), Walker Jones in the 800 (1:59.92) as well as the 4×2 (Tyler Shahan, AJ Payne, Jackson Wharton, Deuley, 1:31.03) and 4×4 (Payne, Christian Rutherford, Wharton, Deuley, 3:25.28).

Connor George was runner-up in the 3200 after finishing in 9:38.78 while Javel Chandler cleared 5 feet, 10 inches to place second in the high jump. The 4×8 also collected eight points after running an 8:20.80 with Lucas Jenkins, Ricardo Salazar, Rogan Mincks and Caden Moat.

Jones added a bronze in the 1600 (4:36.16) as did Ethan Dela Cruz in the long jump (19-6.5). Chandler, who ran a 40.98 in the 300 hurdles to edge Jay Bowling’s 41.12, joined with fellow teammates James Lewis and Tyler Edman to finish third in the shuttles with a time of 59.14.

Rutherford just missed a top-three finish and settled for fourth in the 800 (2:02.35) as did Alex Greer in the pole vault (11-0). Jon Ash scored in both throwing events after placing seventh in the shot put (42-4) and discus (132-1).

The PHS girls had a pair of individual runner-up efforts thanks to Morgan Metz in the 3200 (11;20.67) and Nevaeh Ross in the 300 hurdles (47.98). Ross was fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.86.

Rutherford, Metz, Olivia Carpenter and Audrey Wagoner finished the 4×8 with a runner-up effort of 9:49.03.

Bronze finishes were claimed by Rutherford (800, 2:25.14), Thea Bordeaux (400, 1:03.37), Peyton Louden (shot put, 31-11) and the 4×4 with Rutherford, Carpenter, Allison Poole and Bordeaux (4:20.27).

Mya Baruwa cleared 5 feet in the high jump and finished fourth while Ellie Hines’ time of 5:34.62 in the 1600 was good for fourth and nipped teammate Calli Angelos (5:38.46), who also placed fifth in the 800 with a 2:32.09.
