Local thinclads compete in triple-A regionals

ONA — Mikey Johnson was akin to a great hitter in baseball, fouling away before coming up big.

Johnson, a senior from Huntington High, fouled on four of his six long jump attempts, but landed a first place leap of 21 feet, 7.25 inches. Johnson edged Cabell Midland’s Caden Bowen, a Marshall University signee, by half an inch. Huntington’s Carmelo Sheffield was third at 21-4.5.

Johnson helped the Highlanders boys win the Class AAA Region 4 track and field meet Friday at the Castle. He placed second in the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches behind Navi Hewitt of Parkersburg South and ahead of Connor Casto of Ripley. Johnson placed fourth in the 100 in 11.29.

The Huntington High girls also won, following the boys lead and edging runner-up Cabell Midland.

“I feel like I did pretty well,” Johnson said. “I made it to states in pretty much everything I did. The team was good. Everybody came out and competed and did what they did. Midland Hurricane were right behind us pushing us all the way.”

Huntington High’s unit of Keagan Sack, Tayveon Wilson, Zah Jackson and Johnson won the 4×100 in 42.86. Cabell Midland was second in 42.97, and Hurricane third in 44.10. The Highlanders’ 4×200 squad of Malik McNeely, Skyler Ball, Sack and Jonathan Jackson placed first in 1:31.11, edging Cabell Midland by 1.09. Spring Valley was third in 1:34.17.

The Highlanders won the shuttle hurdle relay as Cam Veazey, Avonte Crawford, Khani Walker and Elliott Hughes combined to run 58.34. Spring Valley ran 59.73 to take second. Hurricane was third in 1:00.58.

“What a meet,” Huntington High coach Justin Cox said. “it’s going to be the same type of a battle next week. We opened up some doors for some teams to come in tonight and get some extra points and those types of things. We have to make sure we close those doors this week and don’t let teams from across the state come in and capitalize on that.”

Cabell Midland’s Cohen Jordan went 14 feet to win the pole vault by a foot and a half over Parkersburg South’s Byron Dearth. Wyatt Colonel of Huntington High went 12 feet to place third.

The Knights’ 4×800 squad of Jacob Barthlow, Dylan Dial, Colson Elswick and Tristan Blatt won in 8:23.58. Hurricane was second in 8:26.50. Parkersburg South was third in 8:26.61. Blatt won the 1,600 in 4:17.44, upsetting Hurricane’s Ty Steorts who ran second in 4:19.19. Cabell Midland’s Aidan Kneeland was third in 4:22.19

Michael Lunsford from Cabell Midland easily won the shot put with a toss of 64-3, almost 15 feet farther than Hurricane’s Ethan Chill. Matthew Edwards of the Knights was third at 46-11. Lunsford, who signed for track and football at Marshall University, also won the discus with a heave of 152-10. Chill flung 144-8, good for second. Edwards was third at 135-5.

Steorts, headed to the University of Tennessee, ran 9:24.78 to win the 3,200-meter run. Kneeland was second in 9:26.16. The Redskins’ Aaron Kidd ran 9:28.67 to come in third. Hurricane’s Julion Grace won the 100 in a facility record 11.03. Cabell Midland’s Myles Meadors was second in 11.26. Ball of Huntington High was third in 11.27.

Grace said he nearly false started as he heard a sound before the starter’s pistol fired.

“I heard a click, then a boom,” Grace said, with a laugh. “Everybody was, ‘did you not hear that?’ We all heard that, but we all came out clean so it was all good.”

Grace also won the 200 in 22.72, narrowly edging Meadors, who ran 22.80. Sack was third at 23.04.

Dalton Ferguson of Spring Valley dominated the 110 hurdles in 14.82, beating Jai’Den Smith of Hurricane by .49 of a second. Crawford was third in 15.61. Ferguson also took first in the 300 hurdles in 40.34. Parkersburg South’s Jordan Foster ran 40.61, good for second, and Veazey 40.75 to place third.

Landon Deuly of Parkersburg took the 400 in 50.32, nipping Huntington High’s Matthew Morrow, who finished in 51.24. Bryce Fuller from Spring Valley placed third in 51.35.

On the girls side, Ripley’s Elie Hosaflook, who signed to run at Marshall, won the 3,200-meter run in 11:17.77, her fastest time this season. She was just shy of six seconds faster than Ella Hardin of Hurricane. Cabell Midand’s Savannah Pritt was next at 11:34.24.

“The strategy going into regionals was just to qualify for the state meet,” Hosaflook said. “I’d have been happy with third. I’d have been happy with second or first. I didn’t really have a goal time or anything, just to qualify and get to the state meet.”

Hosaflook said she didn’t set out to establish a season personal record.

“That was not at all the plan,” she said. “It just happened. I was really relaxed and it happened.”

Hosaflook’s teammate, Opal Huffman, won the 400 in 1:00.74. Quincey Mullins of Huntington High was runner-up in 1:01.56. Ella Rowe from Cabell Midland was third in 1:01.61.

Huntington High’s Mallory Dunn-Martin ran 14.98 to win the 100 hurdles. The Highlanders’ Milleah Johnson was second in 15.04 and Parkersburg’s Addison Gherke third in 15.63.

HHS’ 4×200 relay unit of Audrey Flynn, Takyiah Brown, Johnson and Dunn-Martin won in 1:44.92. Ripley was second in 1:50.26 and Parkersburg South third in 1:51.38. Flynn, Johnson, Dunn-Martin and Siraye Harper teamed to win the 4×100 in 49.89. Spring Valley placed second in 49.90 and Parkersburg third in 51.90.

Huntington High freshman Laurel Johnson won the 800 in 2:21.17. Cabell Midland’s Adalynn Cantrell ran second in 2:23.04 and Aubrey Lantz of Parkersburg third in 2:33.33. Dunn-Martin captured the 300 hurdles in 46.96. Gherke placed second in 47.35 and Addison White of Parkersburg South third in 49.69.

The Highlanders quartet of Tamara Hamlin, Leilani Bounds, Macaria Johnson and Malleah Johnson won the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:05.14. Parkersburg finished second in 1:07.74 and Parkersburg South third in 1:09.09.

“It’s great to win,” Huntington High coach Justin Cox said. “We set school records in the 4×200, 4×400 and shuttles tonight. It was a really quality effort across the board. The biggest thing is we got everybody to state, pending some at large bids we should have.”

The Knights’ 4×800 team of Cantrell, Maya Casto, Quinn Hazelett and Reagan Conley won in 9:52.07, well ahead of runner-up Parkersburg, which crossed the finish line in 10:11.97. Huntington High came in third in 10:19.86.

The Knights’ Ava Wortman won the discus throw at 117-9. Her teammate Cameron Clary was second at 109-9 and and Bella Bowman of Parkersburg third in 109-0. Clary captured the shot put title, throwing 34-9.5. Rylyn Bielinski of Hurricane was second at 34-2.5 and Lucie Cline of Parkersburg South third at 32-4. Spring Valley’s Haleigh Crum won three events. She took the long jump at 17-4.75, 11 inches better than Harper. Kymani Prince of Parkersburg South finished third at 6-5. Crum also raced to the championship of the 100 in 12.61. Timberwolves teammate Sydney Turner was second in 12.89, with Harper third at 12.95. Crum won the 200 in 26.37. Harper ran 26.89 for second and Kyndyll Butler of Ripley 26.98 for third.

Parkersburg South’s Mya Baruwa leaped 5-2 to win the high jump. Macie Maynard of Spring Valley and Daysha Hastings of Parkersburg also went 5-2 to finish second and third, respectively.

The top three finishers in each event qualified for next week’s state meet at Laidley Field in Charleston.
