Edison defeats Jackson to win 6th-grade crown

PARKERSBURG — Jackson played its best game of the year against top-seeded Edison here Friday evening inside Memorial Fieldhouse during the Wood County sixth grade girls championship tilt, but the second-seeded Generals still came up short, 39-27.

The Eagles of head coach Rick Dobson used their fullcourt pressure to force 34 turnovers, which resulted in 25 steals, en route to capping off a 12-0 campaign. The Generals of head coach Jessy Riffle had previously fallen 41-29 and 51-15.

Jackson (9-3) fell behind 8-0 in the first 2 minutes of the affair and never led. The Generals were doomed by 10 turnovers in each of the opening two quarters.

Grace Dotson’s assist to Addison Graham 25 seconds in put the Eagles ahead for good. Lindsey Logston, who had 10 points and three steals, followed with back-to-back layups. Quinn Bolyard, who had game-highs of 15 points and 12 steals, made it 8-0 after she drained a pair of foul shots.

Jackson finally got on the board when Laekyn Hart scored inside. The Generals still trailed 10-4 after Anabelle Herrington, who had 11 points and eight caroms, converted a putback. Edison led 12-4 after one thanks to Logston converting a baseline floater.

Bryley Starkey tallied six of her 10 points in the second quarter to help Edison to a 25-10 halftime advantage. Starkey finished with 10 points, six rebounds and six steals.

The Generals came out strong in the third as Aelissa Stavrakis recorded one of her game-high four assists on a Herrington deuce. Maria Guice, who finished with seven points and a trio of steals, then hit from beyond the arc to cut the deficit to 10.

However, Bolyard rebounded her own miss and then followed that up with a lay-in, which pushed the lead back to 14.

Three points by Herrington and a bucket from Aubree Harner closed it back to single digits at 29-20, but Starkey scored twice more to put Edison in front 33-20 entering the final six minutes.

Although Edison missed its first seven shots of the fourth, Jackson wasn’t able to score until Hart made a foul shot at the 4:19 mark. Seven turnovers in the stanza thwarted any hopes of a rally.

Bolyard, Graham, Starkey, Logston, Hart, Harrington and Guice were joined on the all-tournament team by Williamstown’s Maggie Johnson and Maggie Frye, Hamilton’s Liddy Wilfong and Kelina Bunting-Utietiang as well as Blennerhassett’s Raylen Reeder.
