Glenville State women hold on to beat W.Va. Wesleyan
GLENVILLE — Upset-minded West Virginia Wesleyan came up just short here Saturday afternoon inside the Waco Center as the Bobcats fell 61-55 to No. 2 Glenville State in Mountain East Conference action.
The Pioneers (15-1, 9-1), who only led 31-28 at intermission, shot just 31.9% (22 of 69) and missed on 26 of 35 attempts from beyond the arc.
Mickayla Perdue paced GSU with a game-high 15 points. Hya Haywood came off the Pioneer bench to chip in a dozen counters. Breanna Campbell was limited to four points, but pulled down nine rebounds and also dished out a game-high five assists.
Emma Witt and Daveona Hatchell led the Bobcats (2-12, 1-9 MEC) with 14 points apiece. Imani Jackson contributed six points and tied Campbell for game-high rebounding honors.
Skylar Davidson added nine counters for the Pioneers, who play Wednesday night at W.Va. State.
Marietta 60, Heidelberg 39
TIFFIN, Ohio — Marietta College’s monster fourth quarter gave them a decisive 60-39 win over Heidelberg University Saturday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women’s basketball action. The Pioneers now sport an overall record of 11-4 and are 6-2 in the OAC. Heidelberg drops to 2-13 on the season and 0-8 in conference games.
“We didn’t start off the game well,” Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. “But we found our footing in the second half against their zone. We started to move the ball better and cut. Really happy to be leaving Tiffin with a win.”
Both teams got off to slow starts as the Pioneers and Student Princes only put up four points apiece in the first few minutes. Devin Hefner’s layup and a jumper from Olivia Gribble put the Pioneers on the board, but the Marietta shooting got cold and, as a result, Heidelberg jetted out to an 8-4 lead. Adi Hill hit from three-point range at the 3:30 mark to cut the lead to one and, a minute later, Erin Hahn converted a layup to give the Pioneers their first lead of the game. Makenzie Wilson’s layup with under a minute left put the lead at 11-8 and the Pioneer took that score into the second period.
Early in the second period, the Pioneers extended the lead to seven after Hannah Schill stole a Student Prince pass, sent a pass to Ally Grake who found Gribble open on the perimeter for the trey. Heidelberg fought back to cut the deficit to one after Hallie Rogers nailed a jumper. Marietta answered quickly, though, as Gribble hit from three-point range, putting the lead back at four. The Pioneers finished the half strong as Hefner hit a three-pointer and Wilson put in two more layups and Marietta took a 28-22 lead into halftime.
Early in the third period, the Pioneers got layups from Hefner and Paige Tolson to get the lead back to eight and Gribble’s triple at the 4:37 mark put the score at 35-26. The Pioneers continued to extend the lead as Kelly Levering and Hahn scored and Marietta had their biggest lead of the game, 14 points. Heidelberg cut the deficit to nine as they hit the final two shots of the period and, after three periods of play, the score was 40-31 in favor of the Pioneers.
The fourth quarter began with a Pioneer offensive explosion as they outscored the Student Princes 11-2 in the first three minutes. Hahn hit a quick layup and then the Pioneers buried three consecutive three-pointers, one from Hefner and two from Gribble. Later in the quarter, Schill converted a layup pushing the margin to 22 points, 54-32, with 5:42 left in the game. Heidelberg could not bridge the gap and the Pioneers would cruise to a 60-39 victory.
Gribble led Marietta with 17 points, shooting 5-10 from three-point range. Hefner finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Hahn ended with eight points and led the Pioneers with nine rebounds.
Heidelberg’s Hallie Rogers led all scorers with 18 points.
Marietta will next travel to Columbus Wednesday as they will tangle with Capital University. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Heidelberg 82, Marietta 76
TIFFIN, Ohio — The Marietta College men’s basketball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Heidelberg University by the score of 82-76 Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers slip to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the OAC. Heidelberg improves to 12-3 on the season and 7-1 in the OAC.
Cooper Parrott and Frank Waganfeald both recorded double-doubles to lead the Pioneers. Parrott finished with a game-high 26 points to go along with 11 rebounds and six three-pointers. He set new career highs in points and three-pointers. Waganfeald had 12 points and a game-best 12 rebounds.
Jac Alexander and Sahmi Willoughby each chipped in with 10 points. Willoughby grabbed six boards, while Alexander dished out three assists.
Jashun Cobb came off the bench to lead Heidelberg with 16 points. Emmanuel Perdue finished with 15 points, while Brady Bosma chipped in with 13 points. Eric Panning grabbed a team-high 10 boards.
Lovenson Xavier scored seven of Marietta’s first 10 points as the Pioneers grabbed the early lead. Marietta held a small lead through the first 10 minutes of the game. A layup from Heidelberg’s Isaiah Young at the 10:32 mark tied the game at 18-18.
After trading small leads, Heidelberg went on a 12-4 run to open the only double-digit lead of the game, 38-28, with 2:12 left in the first half. The Pioneers answered with the final five points of the period on a layup from Alexander and Parrott three-pointer to cut the deficit to five points, 38-33, at halftime.
Marietta opened the second half with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 16:42 left on the clock. Parrott spurred the run with five of MC’s points. A three-pointer from Parrott at the 14:52 mark gave Marietta its first lead of the second half, 46-45.
Heidelberg scored on the next possession to regain the lead. The Student Princes held the lead until back-to-back layups from Willoughby and Waganfeald put the Pioneers back in front, 55-53, with 9:28 remaining.
Heidelberg’s Jacob Logsdon answered with a three-pointer and a layup as the Student Princes regained the lead, 58-55, and never trailed again.
Marietta returns home to host Capital University on Wednesday. Tip-off in Ban Johnson Arena is set for 7 p.m.

W.Va. Wesleyan 53
GLENVILLE — Darius Green had a game-high 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds here Saturday afternoon for W.Va. Wesleyan inside the Waco Center, but it wasn’t nearly enough as host Glenville State blew out the Bobcats, 100-53, in a Mountain East Conference tilt.
The Pioneers (10-7, 6-4), who play Wednesday evening at W.Va. State, held a 48-25 halftime advantage and placed seven players in double figures.
Wesleyan connected on just one of its 19 attempts from 3 and lost the rebounding battle, 47-27. Although both teams had 14 turnovers, the G-men held a 27-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
De’ Antre Petree led the way for the Pioneers with 15 points. Also scoring double figures were Harrison Eghan (14), Jacquez Yow (13), Jordan Smith (13), Jay Scott (12), Freddie Word (12) and Jamarvious Jones (10). Eghan had a game-high eight rebounds and Word a game-high six steals.
Jordan Cannon added 12 points and D’Vante Rivera nine in the setback. Wesleyan (1-14, 1-9) also received six points, a quartet of steals and a trio of assists from Jamal Jacobs.
