OVAC boys hoops tourney pairings set
With the girls’ championship games set for Saturday at Harrison Central, the boys’ path to an OVAC championship has been established.
The pairings for next week’s WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital OVAC Boys Basketball Championship were set Wednesday morning as the standings became final on Tuesday night.
The semifinals will be played on Tuesday, Feb. 8 and the championship games – also at Harrison Central – will be played on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Along with the semifinals, the schools not inside of the top four were assigned their consolation tournament matchups by the basketball committee.
CLASS 5A
Dover — a newcomer to the OVAC — has earned the top seed. The Tornadoes have been exceptional this season, reeling off victories in 16 of their 17 outings.
Set to visit Tuscarawas County is University High School. The Hawks (9-6) will make the nearly 150-mile trip after edging out Steubenville for the fourth seed.
Perennial entrant Morgantown is the second seed. The Mohigans, of Coach David Tallman, are seeking their fifth title in school history. Morgantown reeled off three consecutive titles from 2014-16 and then captured the crown last season when the titles were awarded via the standings.
Set to visit Morgantown is Brooke. The Bruins are a solid 9-4 on the season.
CLASS 4A
An all Buckeye 8 final four has been established in this class.
East Liverpool, fresh off winning the league title over St. Clairsville last weekend, is 14-3 on the season and grabbed the top seed. The Potters own four conference titles in hoops. Their last came in 1999.
Slated to visit the Potter Field House is rival Beaver Local. The Beavers are seeking their second title all time. Their only championship came in 2004. For the season, Beaver Local sits at 11-6. Two of those losses came at the hands of the Potters.
In the other half of the bracket, a team coached by a Clifford is guaranteed a spot in the title game as St. Clairsville welcomes Harrison Central.
Ryan’s Red Devils are the second seed with a solid 10-5 mark, while Justin’s Huskies are the third seed at 11-5.
The Red Devils defeated the Huskies in their prior meeting this season. The two were scheduled to play this Friday, but both schools elected to move the game to later in the month foreseeing the OVAC matchup.
St. Clairsville is seeking its first conference title in boys hoops since 2013 and the Huskies haven’t won one since 2007.
CLASS 3A
River has set the pace in this division all winter long, posting victories in 16 of their 17 outings.
Coach Mark Romick’s Pilots will welcome Barnesville, which held off Martins Ferry on bonus points, in the opening round. River, which has defeated the Shamrocks twice, hasn’t won an OVAC title since 2018.
The Shamrocks, meanwhile, are 7-10 and just one of two schools in the entire OVAC to qualify for the top four despite a sub .500 record. Barnesville won the OVAC title in 2019.
In the other half, high-powered Linsly is the second seed. Coach Dave Wojcik’s Cadets will welcome third-seeded Bellaire.
Linsly currently sits at 10-4. It last won the OVAC title in 2012.
The Big Reds, meanwhile, are in the championship portion of the tournament for just the second time. Coach J.R. Battista’s team is 10-8 on the season. Bellaire, which ranks second in OVAC history with 18 championships, hasn’t won one since 2006.
CLASS 2A
Since stubbing its toe in the opening game of the season, Wheeling Central has been extremely impressive, reeling off 12 straight victories to earn the top seed in the class.
The Maroon Knights will welcome Monroe Central, which slipped into the fourth spot after falling to River on Tuesday. Central, which leads all members with an astounding 29 conference titles, has won nine consecutive OVAC titles.
Monroe Central, meanwhile, has enjoyed an impressive season and enters at 14-5. The Seminoles have never won an OVAC boys hoops crown.
In the other half of the bracket, second-seeded Caldwell enters at 13-2. The Redskins have never won an OVAC boys basketball title.
Set to visit the Noble County Seat is third-seeded Shadyside, which moved ahead of Monroe with its win over Martins Ferry on Tuesday. The Tigers are 12-5 and seeking their 14th title in school history and first since 2010.
CLASS 1A
Wellsville, which is the defending champion of the smallest class, is the top seed in this year’s event. The Tigers are 11-5 and will host fourth-seeded Paden City, which is 4-5.
The Wildcats haven’t won an OVAC title on the hardwood since 1994.
Cameron, which toppled Madonna in overtime on Tuesday, will welcome the Blue Dons back to Marshall County for a semifinal.
The Dragons are the second seed and own an 11-3 record. Coach Tom Hart’s squad is seeking the first conference title in program history.
Madonna finished the pre-OVAC portion of the schedule at 9-6. The Blue Dons have won nine OVAC boys titles, but their last came in 2017.
