MYERS: WVU gets the job done

WVU Mountaineer fans tuning in for the Thursday night telecast were treated to a seemingly never ending panorama of the Virginia Tech “Enter Sandman” pregame tradition. Music, fans jumping around, the players entering through their tunnel, and the like. Yes, it’s a nice tradition, but ESPN was fawning and gushing over it like this was the first time we ever saw one. By midway through the fourth quarter there was a stadium more than half empty, except mostly for a few thousand folks with gold jerseys. As the game announcers noted, the night started with Enter Sandman, and finished ...

BENNETT: What’s in a number?

1984 anyone? George Orwell. I’m not sure how many people who might see this have read or done a term paper on the aforementioned novel, but the book written in 1949 might seem like a guide to the future for some. Back into reality, the Ritchie County Rebels are currently the most dangerous 0-3 team in the Little Kanawha Conference in my opinion. Rick Haught’s troops have nothing to lose going into Friday’s game in Ellenboro against Doddridge County, which is seeking program victory No. 500. Should the current No. 6 Bulldogs of boss Bobby Burnside improve to 4-0 they will have ...

MYERS: WVU Looks Ahead

There is always one game on the schedule against an FCS opponent which afford Mountaineer football fans a relaxing afternoon and enable players who normally don’t see game action to get playing time. Saturday was no exception as West Virginia easily dispatched Towson State 65-7. The offense piled up 624 total yards, almost evenly balanced between running and passing. Four quarterbacks saw action, and the second half saw mostly players two and three deep on the depth chart on the field. Running backs Tony Mathis and CJ Donaldson both gained over 100 yards and tallied five touchdowns ...

MYERS: WVU outplayed by KU

WVU Mountaineer fans traveled to the home opener with cautious optimism after a close loss the previous week at Pittsburgh. They left in a sour, despondent mood after a 55-42 overtime loss to what was previously the weakest team in the Big 12 Conference. They were witnesses to one of the worst defensive performances by a West Virginia squad in recent memory. There was a lack of intensity and apparently no one on the defensive staff gave any consideration to what they would do if their original game plan didn’t work. Despite being shredded with three touchdown drives in the second ...

MYERS: This WVU team can compete

The return of the Pitt-West Virginia rivalry before a record Pittsburgh sports crowd was certainly one of the classics in the long history of the series. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the evening, but unfortunately the Panthers made one more play on an interception touchdown return of 56 yards with 2:58 remaining to secure the 38-31 win. The pick six was a deflection off the hands of Bryce Ford-Wheaton, WVU’s best receiver who otherwise had an outstanding game with two TD receptions. The Mountaineers fought back twice when every indication on both occasions was that ...

MYERS: WVU ready in 2022

Summer is winding down and another college football season is upon us. That also means it is time for your Monday Morning Quarterback to make an appearance for the 35th year. The West Virginia Mountaineers enter the 2022 season with little notoriety and modest expectations. Nearly every publication or analysis one can find pegs WVU at 8th or 9th in the Big 12. The over/under in Vegas is 5 ¢ wins. During the two years preceding the hiring of Neal Brown West Virginia averaged 37 points and 486 yards of total offense per game. During Brown’s three year tenure the Mountaineers have ...
