MYERS: WVU Mountaineers showed effort

October 31, 2022

The West Virginia Mountaineers gave a much better effort and performance coming off their disastrous trip to Texas Tech the previous week but still came up short in a 41-31 loss to undefeated and 7th-ranked TCU. In the first half, the WVU offense was as good as we saw this season, with 16 first downs, piling up 305 yards, scoring 21 points and having zero punts. But all of that still wasn’t enough, as the West Virginia defense couldn’t cover, couldn’t tackle and yielded touchdowns plays of 71, 55, 51 and 30 yards. The script completely flipped in the second half. Suddenly, the ...

MYERS: WVU still at a loss

October 24, 2022

Storm clouds are brewing over Morgantown. West Virginia fans in 2019 were asked to Trust the Climb. But what we are seeing instead is a crash through the floor to the basement of the Big 12. You know, the place that was formerly occupied by Kansas for the last 10 years. But they have departed, leaving only a few random Jayhawk feathers to be found. It is ours for the moment. No, WVU is not going to commit four turnovers every game, and they can’t always play this poorly. And yes, there are opportunities to overachieve as occurred just 11 days ago in a home game with Baylor. But ...

BENNETT: WVSSAC can do better for student-athletes

October 20, 2022

Life lessons can come when one least expects them. No one has to tell that to Lauren McDonnell. An old adage in sports has long been play every game like it’s your last. A red card for a handball in the box, initially ruled a yellow, ended McDonnell’s senior season for the Big Reds of first-year Parkersburg High School head coach Phil Wilson. The incident, no matter the believed or perceived intention, happened last week against Morgantown at Stadium Field. Following her red card, the Big Red defender was given the same sentence everyone else gets — a 10% suspension. What’s ...

MYERS: Mountaineers look to Texas Tech

October 17, 2022

WVU Mountaineer football fans in attendance Thursday night were treated to one of the more exciting games played in our venue in recent years. Casey Legg’s field goal with 33 seconds remaining gave West Virginia a dramatic 43-40 much needed win over Baylor. Close games are won by making big plays. While these have been mostly missing from the Mountaineer arsenal in previous outings, WVU made several to secure the win. In the second quarter down a touchdown with the Baylor offense on a roll, a fumble was forced and picked up by Jamir Cox for a 65 yard scoop and score to tie the ...

MYERS: WVU looks to improve

October 10, 2022

Through their first five games of the 2022 season the West Virginia Mountaineers are sitting with an overall 2-3 record (0-2 in the Big 12). They rank #77 in yards per play on offense, #83 in yards per play on defense and 115th in pass defense efficiency. Outside of our placekicker, who has been excellent, the rest of the Special teams aren’t very good either. We could go on, but you get the idea. Right now we thus all recognize that this has not been a very good football team, and the more difficult portion of the schedule remains. Many of us were able to watch portions or all of ...

MYERS: WVU’s letdown hurts

October 3, 2022

The optimistic mindset of WVU football supporters, buoyed by a convincing win over Virginia Tech, lasted only a meager nine days. Mountaineer fans are sophisticated enough to understand that losing to a more talented Texas team on the road might be expected. But the manner in which it occurred was not. This was not an elite Texas squad, having lost the previous week at Texas Tech and playing without their starting quarterback. It is a team which had been defeated by West Virginia late last season with Jarret Doege as the Mountaineer quarterback. There was no reason to believe that WVU ...
