Letter to the Editor: Enough with the discord

To paraphrase William Congreve: “Music hath charms to soothe the savage (beast).”
An old folk song often sung to start events begins “Let us sing together. Let us sing together. One and all a joyous song.” If only we would. In this discordant time, we need a tuneup. Like out of alignment equipment, we need to be realigned. Yesterday a news commentator remarked about a Coca-Cola “love ad.” My memory of it was that it was melodious, fine-tuned, and did indeed speak of love. On the internet, I found a recording of a choir of young people singing it. The line that had resonated with me was “I want to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony.”
Isn’t that what our founding fathers imagined: a well-oiled machine we call democracy that eventually would hum along in harmony? Isn’t that what we all really need? But we can fulfill that need only with the right mechanic/conductor.
The right person would prefer harmony to cacophony. Anger and resentment never give us a good product. A good conductor or a good mechanic must listen to all the parts and work to bring them to harmony, agreement, alignment.
We must consider the abilities, skills and goals of all of our candidates and decide who is best to bring us the harmony we all need. I’m tired of discord.
Vote to make this happen.
