UP: To the honoring of Wirt County native Jessica Lynch by the Military Women's Memorial as the first female prisoner of war to be rescued. Twenty years ago, Lynch, a private first class in the U.S. Army who had been captured in Iraq, was rescued by American forces and became the face of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lynch has gone on to become a teacher, actress, author and motivational speaker; but her story continues to serve as an inspiration. Honors such as the Living Legend award she received during the event are well deserved.

UP: To grand prize winner Henry Corcoran and all the participants in this year's Marietta Times Regional Spelling Bee. With students from 12 school districts participating, the competition was fierce and the final round tense. But all the hard work and studying paid off for Corcoran, of Veritas Classical Academy; Jesse Dean, of St. Sylvester Central School; Bradley Westbrook, of Pleasants County Schools; Charlee Harper, of St. Sylvester Central School and Masen Burkman, of Wood County Schools. Well done, all of you. And best of luck, Henry, at the next level!

UP: To WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center's hosting of the "Strollin' Colon" to raise awareness of colorectal cancer. "The WVU Cancer Institute at Camden Clark is just as focused on cancer screening and prevention as we are state-of-the-art treatment," said Reinnie Leavitt, director of cancer services at Camden Clark. "We are excited to share this opportunity with the community and emphasize the importance of screening and colon cancer awareness." The idea may seem a little funny, but if it prompts a few more people to get over their hesitation and get screened, it is fantastic.
