Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To those who participated in the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley’s annual Day of Action. There were 23 teams of volunteers from organizations and civic groups working at 18 sites — approximately 275 volunteers. Some of those volunteers got competitive, as was the case during the Battle of the Banks, in which more than $15,000 in food products was packed up to be distributed here in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Local people helping local people. Certainly in a community like ours, it doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you, folks, for your day of service.

UP: To the selection of Fort Boreman Park as the site of one of nine giant wooden swings for selfies, scattered throughout West Virginia by the Department of Tourism. “The Nicholas County (Career and Technical Center) students did an amazing job with this project. We couldn’t have imagined a more perfect backdrop to add to these scenic spots,” said Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “So much hard work and skill went into each one, and we are excited to share them with the world, starting today.” The swings will let us share a little bit of Almost Heaven with the world, and the perch at Fort Boreman provides a perfect vista.

UP: To Lakyn Campbell’s election as governor of the 2022 American Legion Auxiliary West Virginia Rhododendron Girls State. The Parkersburg High School senior is a scholar and athlete, and called the governorship “a life changing experience.” Congratulations!
