Alice Irene Delong

Alice Irene Delong, 101, Belmont, WV, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. It was about 11 am on the morning of October 25, 1924, when she was born. Her parents were Raymond and Cora Morrell Delong. Her parents named her Alice Irene. Mother wanted the name Irene and Dad added Alice which was his mother’s name. In 1931, Irene began school at the Belmont School and continued there through the 8th grade. On May 19, 1944, Irene graduated from St. Marys High School and entered Mountain State College in September. Following graduation from Mountain State College in 1946, she went on several job interviews. In August of 1946, she accepted a position with the West Virginia Extension Service of Wood County as a Secretary. Her entire career was with the West Virginia University Extension Service. Irene retired on January 31, 1985 with 38 years of service. She was baptized on August 6, 1972 and she was a member of the Waverly Church of Christ. Throughout the years, Irene has enjoyed teaching children’s bible classes and teaching during vacation bible school. She loved singing hymns and other songs since her childhood. One of her greatest joys was singing with her sister, Edith.

Irene is survived by her nephew, William E. Engle; and one niece, Edith Irene (Tom Gaddy) Engle. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Cora Edith Engle, and brother-in-law, William F. Engle

Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, WV with Danny Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Island Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home. An online guest register is available at www.ingramfh.com.
