Betty J. Swartz
Betty J. Swartz, 64, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by the family she cherished.
Born on April 5, 1961, in Buckhannon, West Virginia, Betty was the beloved daughter of Alfred and Sharon Walton (Parks). She grew up in Parkersburg and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1979. Betty went on to build a remarkable 35-year career at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Parkersburg, where her colleagues became lifelong friends.
Betty shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, Scot. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter in “Almost Heaven.” Her greatest blessing was their daughter, Sarah, whom Betty celebrated every day of her life. Betty was more than a mother to Sarah – she was a best friend and her biggest cheerleader.
In the fall and winter, you could find Betty in Morgantown cheering on the Mountaineers, and in the summer, soaking up the sunshine at her home. To know Betty was to experience true grace and quiet strength. She held space for others, even when she was struggling herself. And even in silence, she was always present.
Betty is survived by her husband, Scot; her daughter, Sarah (Stephen) Rogers; her mother, Sharon; her brothers, Roger and David (Jill) Walton; and her nephew, Cole. She was also affectionately known as “Grandma Betty” to many and leaves behind a large circle of extended family and dear friends who will forever miss her peaceful spirit.
She is preceded in death by her father, Alfred B. Walton.
Visitation will be held at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg on Friday, July 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the providers and team members at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Parkersburg, an organization close to Betty’s heart.
