Parkersburg City Council to vote on budget revisions Tuesday
PARKERSBURG – Members of City Council will vote on budget revisions to reflect estimates for the remainder of the fiscal year Tuesday, provided members of the Finance Committee vote to refer the resolution at a meeting earlier in the evening
The committee is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Meeks Conference Room on the second floor of the Municipal Building.
The revision proposes increases of $450,000 each to the projected revenue for the business and occupation and municipal sales taxes. Officials have previously said they budget conservatively so they do not allocate more funds than they receive and make adjustments as actual revenue comes in.
Allocations include $280,025 to the street fund and $140,000 to the capital reserve fund, along with changes to shore up budget lines for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends June 30. Those include an additional $100,000 and $75,000, respectively, to the maintenance and repair (auto/truck) and auto/equipment repair supplies line items for the Central Garage, and $90,100 to restock the Street Cleaning Department’s salt supply.
The $140,000 to capital reserve is proposed to be allocated toward a fountain in the City Park pond and work on Pappas Plaza, which has been dug up as part of a storm water drainage project.
Other changes include additions of $200,000 to the Police Department overtime line item and $167,000 to the Fire Department’s holiday payout line item. These are offset by reductions of $500,000 and $100,000 in the patrolmen and firemen salary line items, respectively, reflecting vacant positions.
If referred by the committee, the resolution will be considered at the regular council meeting, slated for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers.
The agenda also includes the laying of the levy for the upcoming fiscal year, required by state code to be done on the third Tuesday in April.
Two other resolutions include scheduling next month’s council meetings for May 5 and 26 because the primary election takes place on May 12 and authorizing Mayor Tom Joyce to accept and administer a $35,579 Justice Assistance Grant. Of that, $23,157 will be used for “critical equipment” for the Parkersburg Police Department, with $12,422 for a specialized drone and support equipment for the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.
