Canvass results in continued tie in Muskingum Township

(Graphic Illustration - MetroCreativeConnection)

MARIETTA — The Washington County Board of Elections completed its official canvass of the Nov. 4 general election Wednesday morning.

Despite the review, the results indicated there was still a tie between Muskingum Township Trustee candidates Steven Rech and Gary Doan with 489 votes each which was 486 before review. Rech ultimately won in a coin toss by an official.

Washington County Board of Elections Director Mandy Amos said they will conduct a recount.

“When there’s a tie like this, it’s required by law that we recount the ballots to make sure everything was counted correctly,” she said.

Amos said they are scheduled to conduct the recount at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 19 to ensure accuracy and fairness.

Recounts happen if the results of a vote for an issue or candidate are less than 0.5% difference, according to Amos.
