MARIETTA — Authorities have released more information about the body that was discovered on the west bank of the Muskingum River in Harmar on Tuesday evening.

According to Marietta Police Captain Ryan Huffman the body was discovered by a coach.

“A coach for the Marietta College crew team had spotted the body on the bank (Tuesday) at about 5:45 p.m.,” Huffman said.

Huffman confirmed the location where the body was found, stating it was on the bank of the Muskingum River off Gilman Avenue just south of the Washington Street bridge between it and the Marietta College Boathouse..

The Marietta Police Department does not have an exact time for how long the body had been there.

“It’s tough to date,” Huffman said. “We can sort of date it by the receding flood waters. He had been there for several days.”

He was recovered Tuesday night and transported to the Montgomery County coroner’s office. The coroner’s office will perform an autopsy Wednesday. He said the autopsy should occur Wednesday.

Once the police have confirmed the identity of the body and notified any family then they will release the identity of the body, according to Huffman.

Marietta Firefighters Local 442, which represents Marietta police officers, put a post on their Facebook page Wednesday morning stating the body was that of a middle-aged Caucasian male and that no identification was found and asking for anyone who knows of someone missing who fit the description to contact the Marietta Police Department.

Huffman said on Wednesday the Marietta Police Department is searching through leads of missing individuals currently.

“We’ve received several calls about a missing individual from Zanesville, but we do not believe it is that individual from Zanesville,” Huffman said about the calls the police department has received.

Huffman did not identify the individual from Zanesville.

As far as a cause of death for the man’s body discovered Wednesday night, Huffman said “indications on the scene last night are we don’t suspect any foul play.”

The Marietta Police Department responded to the scene and Marietta Fire Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the recovery of the body, Huffman said.
