CHARLESTON — Active cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus exceeded 1,200 and hospitalizations were more than 200 on Monday in West Virginia, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state reported 1,207 active cases statewide and 920 new cases received since the last report on Friday morning. Cases were last over 1,200 in late September.
Twenty-four of the 55 counties were listed as yellow on the County Alert System Map that is based on infection rates and percent positivity, the department said in its morning pandemic update.
All other counties in the state are green.
Five levels are on the scaled system with green being the lowest, yellow at second lowest, gold mid-level, orange at second highest and red at the highest. Alert designations are based on the lower of the measurements for infection rate and percent positivity.
Four counties in the region are yellow, Tyler, Pleasants, Ritchie and Roane.
However, Calhoun and Gilmer are in the yellow for infection rate, Jackson is in the yellow for percent positivity, Tyler is in the gold for percent positivity and Pleasants measured in the red zone for percent positivity.
Current active cases in local counties are (previous report): Calhoun 2 (1); Doddridge 0 (0); Gilmer 1 (1); Jackson 18 (18); Pleasants 9 (8); Ritchie 6 (9); Roane 12 (9); Tyler 8 (8); Wetzel 6 (12); Wirt 0 (1); Wood 45 (49).
Hospitalizations reported by the department were 203 on Monday with 26 patients in an intensive care unit and 10 on a ventilator. Nine pediatric cases were reported with one in an ICU and on a ventilator.
The last time hospitalizations were over 200 was in late September.
No deaths were reported between Friday and Monday mornings. The death count remained at 7,661 since the pandemic began in early 2020.
