West Virginia sees active COVID cases climb to 972
CHARLESTON — Statewide active cases in West Virginia neared 1,000 on Monday, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department reported 972 active cases on Monday. It also reported 738 new positive cases were received since the last pandemic update on Friday.
State health officers believe the state has reached the peak in the number of cases, but warned colder weather could rise as more people stay indoors. Active cases dropped to 620 last week.
Active cases in local counties on Monday (previous report) were: Calhoun, 4 (3); Doddridge, 3 (3); Gilmer, 2 (9); Jackson, 14 (7); Pleasants, 2 (0); Ritchie, 5 (7); Roane, 14 (10); Tyler, 3 (4); Wetzel, 16 (11); Wirt, 2 (0); Wood, 47 (46).
Ten counties in the state are yellow, second lowest to green, on the County Alert System Map. Three counties in the region are yellow, Pleasants, Doddridge and Wetzel.
All other counties in the state are green.
Another eight residents have died from the virus since Friday, raising the death toll to 7,522, the department said.
The department Monday confirmed the deaths of a 60-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 75-year-old man from Fayette County, a 79-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 76-year-old man from Fayette County, an 89-year-old woman from Mineral County, an 88-year-old woman from Braxton County, an 82-year-old woman from Kanawha County and an 84-year-old man from Raleigh County.
“Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and to those who are currently battling COVID-19,” department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. “We must continue fighting this disease through vaccines and boosters.”
The state reported 158 patients are in the hospital with 19 in an intensive care unit and eight on ventilators. Two pediatric cases were reported with one on a ventilator.
