PARKERSBURG — A Parkersburg man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly striking a house and a resident with his vehicle and leaving the scene of two accidents.
He also reportedly spoke to and frightened a juvenile who had just gotten off a school bus, but police said there was no criminal offense in that incident.
Alphonso Lesean Johnson, 32, of 647 Sixth St., Parkersburg, was charged with driving under the influence, destruction of property, battery and three counts of leaving the scene of an accident. He was being held on a $2,500 bond requiring a 10% cash deposit at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.
Johnson reportedly picked up a woman with whom he was acquainted and gave her a ride to her residence on Lee Street after her bicycle got a flat tire, Parkersburg Police Chief Matthew Board said.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Wood County Magistrate Court, Johnson tried to follow her inside and they got into an argument when she told him to leave. When she attempted to remove her bike from his white Jeep, he shoved her down, then got into the vehicle and drove it into the side of the house before backing up and striking her as well, the complaint said.
The woman did not sustain serious injuries, Board said.
Around 3:45 p.m., the department received a call about an accident in which the Jeep was rear-ended, Board said. It had left the scene but officers realized it matched the description of the vehicle from the Lee Street call less than half an hour earlier.
About 10 minutes later, it was reported that a man in a white Jeep “attempted to establish communication” with a child exiting a school bus in the 1000 block of Latrobe Street, Board said. The bus driver began blowing his horn and the Jeep fled the area, police said.
Although no criminal charge arose from that incident, Board praised the bus driver for intervening.
“Regardless of the defendant’s intent, very, very good work on the school bus driver’s part,” he said.
Less than 20 minutes later, Johnson reportedly pulled up beside a woman near the Dollar General on Seventh Street and offered her money to get into his vehicle, Board said. She went inside and called the police. Around 4:30, police received a report of the Jeep rear-ending a vehicle in the 1900 block of Ohio Avenue and fleeing, Board said.
Police caught up to Johnson in the 600 block of Green Street, where he was traveling along the train tracks, magistrate records said. After initially attempting to avoid police, Johnson complied with their verbal commands to stop and was taken into custody.
