Active COVID cases, hospitalizations continues to fluctuate in West Virginia

CHARLESTON — Active cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus dropped by 130 between Wednesday and Thursday, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported on Thursday morning.

The state reported 3,036 active cases Thursday, a decline from the 3,166 reported in its Wednesday morning pandemic update. Active cases at the high point of the surges during the 30-month-old pandemic were from 21,700 to 29,700.

The lowest levels this year were around 260 in the first of April.

The department also reported 968 new cases were received between Wednesday and Thursday.

Current active cases in local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun 8 (8), Doddridge 8 (8), Gilmer 9 (11), Jackson 41 (36), Pleasants 7 (9), Ritchie 13 (16), Roane 37 (38), Tyler 13 (12), Wetzel 13 (12), Wirt 9 (11), Wood 198 (194).

Monroe and Hardy counties were elevated to gold, mid-level, on the County Alert System Map based on infection rates.

Eleven counties including Wetzel and Pleasants were green, the lowest alert level. Wood, Tyler, Ritchie, Doddridge Wirt, Jackson, Roane, Calhoun and Gilmer are yellow, second lowest on the charts.

Four deaths were reported since Wednesday’s report, raising the number of dead since the pandemic started to 7,173.

Deaths confirmed were a 93-year-old woman from Marion County, a 75-year-old man from Harrison County, a 78-year-old man from Mercer County and a 98-year-old woman from Harrison County.

The state’s condolences were expressed by department Secretary Bill J. Crouch.

“Each death of a West Virginian is a loss felt by all,” Crouch said. “We extend our sincere condolences to these families and encourage all eligible individuals to get vaccinated and boosted.”

Hospitalizations statewide were 341 on Thursday, 183 unvaccinated. Fifty-eight patients were in the intensive care units, 38 vaccinated, and 18 were on a ventilator, seven unvaccinated.

Eleven pediatric patients were reported with six in an ICU.

Among outbreaks reported on Thursday were 51 staff and 86 inmates, the Division of Corrections said. Twenty-one are at the North central Regional Jail in Doddridge County and two are at the St. Marys Correctional Center.
