West Virginia sees active COVID cases fluctuate, hospitalizations continue decline

CHARLESTON — Active cases again fluctuated on Wednesday in West Virginia where another 25 residents are confirmed deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported.

The state reported 305 active cases on Wednesday after Tuesday’s pandemic update cited 263, the lowest numbers since the early days of the pandemic in March 2020.

Active cases in local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun 2 (1), Doddridge 0 (0), Gilmer 1 (1), Jackson 3 (2), Pleasants 0 (2), Ritchie 4 (4), Roane 4 (3), Tyler 1 (2), Wetzel 1 (3), Wirt 1 (1), Wood 10 (8).

The 25 additional deaths include 20 deaths found in the data reconciliation with the death certificates by the Bureau of Public Health. The deaths occurred between January and March while five occurred in January, October and December 2021.

Deaths were reported in Marion, Upshur, Lincoln, Pendleton, Nicholas, Randolph, Raleigh, Taylor, Cabell, Wyoming, Fayette, Barbour, Jefferson, Kanawha, Mercer, Boone, McDowell, Preston, Randolph and Monongalia counties.

The youngest were a 49-year-old woman from Marion County and a 47-year-old woman from Barbour County.

The death count since the pandemic began was at 6,741 people as of Wednesday.

All counties are green on the County Alert System Map. Green is the lowest level based on infection rates.

Hospitalizations Wednesday were 127, 68 unvaccinated. Thirty-four eight patients are in an intensive care unit, 23 unvaccinated, and 19 are on ventilators, 10 unvaccinated.

Three pediatric patients with one in an ICU were reported.
