Active coronavirus cases drop below 400 statewide

CHARLESTON — Another 51 deaths attributed to the COVID-19 coronavirus were reported Tuesday morning by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

Forty-six of the deaths were from the routine data reconciliation with the death certificates by the Bureau of Public Health. The deaths occurred in August and from January to March.

The additional 51 deaths raise the death count to 6,794 residents since the pandemic began more than two years ago in West Virginia, according to the department. The number is around the population of Elkins.

Among the deaths reported on Tuesday were a 56-year-old man from Wetzel County, a 74-year-old man from Roane County, an 82-year-old woman from Jackson County and a 78-year-old man from Jackson County. The deaths were among those found by the reconciliation.

Deaths also were reported in Putnam, Kanawha, Greenbrier, Tucker, Raleigh, Cabell, Summers, Ohio, Berkeley, McDowell, Monongalia, Wyoming, Wayne, Harrison, Webster, Fayette, Mineral, Randolph, Logan, Monroe, Barbour, Summers, Morgan and Mercer counties. The youngest was a 41-year-old man from Putnam County.

“This is another difficult day for West Virginia,” DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said.

“Our hearts go out to these West Virginians and their families. Let’s continue taking every precaution we can to slow the spread of this disease, including vaccination.”

In Wood County, at least 341 residents have died from COVID-19 complications since the pandemic began, third highest in the state behind Kanawha and Cabell counties. Raleigh County is fourth with 340 deaths.

Death counts in other local counties as of Tuesday are: Calhoun 13; Doddridge 18; Gilmer 18; Jackson 135; Pleasants 34; Ritchie 32; Roane 38; Tyler 31; Wetzel 83; and Wirt 24.

The state reported 161 residents in a hospital with confirmed COVID complications, 96 of those are unvaccinated. Fifty patients, 29 unvaccinated, are in an intensive care unit. Eighteen people, 10 unvaccinated, are on a ventilator.

Four pediatric patients were reported with one in an ICU.

Active cases have dropped below 400 to 376 as of Tuesday. The numbers are near those in the early days of the pandemic in 2020.

Ninety-four new cases have been received since Monday’s report.

Thirteen actiove cases were reported in Wood County.

Case numbers in other counties in the region were (previous day): Calhoun 0 (0); Doddridge 2 (2); Gilmer 0 (0); Jackson 0 (1); Pleasants 1 (1); Ritchie 2 (2); Roane 8 (8); Tyler 0 (0); Wetzel 6 (6); and Wirt 1 (0).

All counties remain green on the County Alert System Map. The green level is the lowest rate of infection and spread.

Seventeen active inmate cases and five active staff cases were reported by the Division of Corrections. One inmate case at the Parkersburg Community Corrections, one at the St. Marys Correctional Center, and two at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County were reported.
