West Virginia sets active COVID case record
57 more deaths reported statewide
CHARLESTON — West Virginia reached a new COVID-19 active case high Friday while 57 more deaths have been attributed to the virus since the Thursday morning pandemic update, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The deaths include those in a data reconciliation with the death certificates by the Bureau of Public Health, the state said.
Among the dead are a 67-year-old man from Wood County, a 45-year-old man from Wood County, an 87-year-old woman from Wirt County, a 52-year-old woman from Wood County and a 74-year-old woman from Wetzel County.
The death toll since the pandemic began in March 2020 was 3,370 as of Friday morning, according to the state.
Deaths also were confirmed in Clay, Monongalia, Raleigh, Mercer, Tucker, Barbour, Morgan, Harrison, Greenbrier, Wayne, Mingo, Lincoln, Mason, Kanawha, Brooke, Randolph, Ohio, Cabell and Logan counties. The youngest were 47, 49, 50, 54, 56, 59 and 63 and the oldest were 91 and 95.
The 18 additional deaths found in the reconciliation include an 88-year-old man from Pleasants County. The youngest was a 43-year-old man from Berkeley County.
“We mourn with all families suffering the loss of loved ones due to COVID-19,” DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. “If you are eligible, I urge you to schedule your COVID vaccine today.”
Forty-five counties are red, the worst level of infection and percent positivity on the County Alert System map. Wood, Wetzel, Tyler, Doddridge, Ritchie, Wirt, Jackson and Calhoun are in that category.
Pleasants and Roane are orange, second-highest, and Gilmer is gold, mid-level. No counties are at the lowest level of green and only one county, Tucker, is yellow, second-lowest.
The state Friday reported 29,744 active cases statewide, exceeding the previous high of 29,257 cases set the second week of January. Active cases were reported at 28,773 on Thursday,
New cases received in the 24-hour period between Thursday and Friday mornings were 2,320, the state said.
Active cases in Wood County were 1,510 on Friday, up from 1,436 on Thursday. Active cases in other local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun, 247 (236); Doddridge, 151 (146); Gilmer, 46 (43); Jackson, 324 (306); Pleasants, 143 (130); Ritchie, 249 (235); Roane, 203 (206); Tyler, 251 (258); Wetzel, 391 (379); Wirt, 130 (124).
Of the 905 people in a hospital, 739 are unvaccinated, the state said. About 90 percent of patients in an intensive care unit, 251 of the 278, are unvaccinated, and 91 percent of those on ventilators, 151 of 166, are unvaccinated, the state said.
Hospitalizations also have exceeded the high marks set in January when 818 were hospitalized, 219 were in intensive care and 104 were on ventilators.
WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center reported Friday 76 COVID-19 patients are in the hospital, 61 of those unvaccinated, with 14 in the ICU and 13 of those unvaccinated, and 10 people on a ventilator, nine unvaccinated.
Of the 2,261 deaths since vaccinations started, 111 were breakthrough cases — among fully vaccinted individuals — or 5.16 percent.
Wood County Schools also updated its COVID-19 dashboard of infections on Thursday. The school system reported 113 infections with Parkersburg High School leading all other schools with 31 while five each were reported at Parkersburg South and Williamstown High.
