Wood County woman among three latest COVID deaths

CHARLESTON — A Wood County resident was listed as one of three confirmed deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus on Monday morning, accoring to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, said.

The state confirmed the deaths of a 77-year-old woman from Wood County, a 66-year-old man from Clay County and a 49-year-old woman from Marshall County. Deaths in West Virginia since the pandemic began 14 months ago was at 2,775.

The number of active cases was 5,499, a downward trend, with 150 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, the state said.

Active cases in local counties: Calhoun, 23; Doddridge, 16; Gilmer, 13; Jackson, 58; Pleasants, 43; Ritchie, 24; Roane, 17: Tyler, 50: Wetzel, 115; Wirt, 21; Wood, 88.

The state is updating the coronavirus dashboard Monday through Friday, except holidays. Previously, it also was updated on Saturday and Sunday.

The state reported 218 people were in the hospital with 78 in an intensive care unit and 30 on ventilators.

The state has fully vaccinated 36.9 percent of residents12 and older, or 661,347 people. People with at least one shot were at 775,176 people, or 43.3 percent of the population.

The mask mandate will be removed June 20 when the percentage is around 65 percent, according to the governor.

Wood, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer and Roane counties were green on the County Alert System, the lowest level based on infection rates and percentage of those testing positive. Jackson was gold.

Tyler and Ritchie were yellow, second lowest level of severity.

Wetzel and Pleasants counties are orange, midway on the chart for severity.

Vaccination clinics are scheduled this week across the state. Check with the clinics to determine if appointments are necessary.

Clinics will be held: 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at Roane General Hospital in Spencer and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday at Coplin Health Systems in Elizabeth; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday at the Gilmer County Health Department in Glenville; 9 a.m.-noon Thursday at the United Methodist Church in New Martinsville for Wetzel and Tyler counties; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday at the WVU Parkersburg Early Learning Center.
