Wood County resident among weekend COVID deaths
CHARLESTON — A resident of Wood County was listed in the eight deaths this weekend from the COVID-19 coronavirus by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The 81-year-old Wood County man was reported in the Saturday morning pandemic update by the state for the 24-hour period from Friday to Saturday morning.
The state reported eight deaths this weekend, three from Friday to Saturday and five from Saturday to Sunday in Wood, Kanawha, Harrison, Berkeley, Mineral, Raleigh and Hampshire counties.
The total number of deaths as of Sunday was 2,785 since the pandemic began more than a year ago.
Deaths in Wood County as of Sunday was at 168 people, the most deaths in the region. Death counts in other counties are: Jackson, 62; Wetzel, 29; Pleasants, 17; Ritchie, 11; Gilmer, Roane, Tyler, 8; Doddridge, 6: Wirt, 3; and Calhoun, 0.
New cases of the virus increased 446 in the 24-hour period from Friday to Saturday morning and increased 370 in the period from Saturday to Sunday, the state said. Total active cases were 7,390 on Sunday, up from 7,317 on Saturday.
Active case totals as of Sunday (previous day) in local counties are: Calhoun, 18 (18); Doddridge, 22 (19); Gilmer, 2 (1); Jackson, 73 (72); Pleasants, 9 (8); Ritchie, 15 (14); Roane, 27 (30); Tyler, 21 (25); Wetzel, 70 (64); Wirt, 10 (9); and Wood, 118 (121).
Hospitalizations totaled 232, with 60 in an intensive care unit and 20 on ventilators.
The state has fully vaccinated 506,965 people. Residents 16 an older can pre-register for vaccinations at vaccinate.wv.gov or call 833-734-0965.
Berkeley and Nicholas counties were in the red zone on the County Alert System map, the most severe level based on infection and positivity rates. Wood, Pleasants, Tyler, Ritchie, Roane, Calhoun and Gilmer were green, the least severe. Wetzel and Wirt were gold, third in severity, and Doddridge and Jackson were yellow, second in severity.
