SISTERSVILLE — Students from Tyler County and Paden City schools were honored for academic excellence last week during the Peoples Bank Academic Awards Ceremonies.

Both events on Tuesday and Thursday were held at Tyler Consolidated High School near Middlebourne.

The students in grades 5-12 were recognized for having the highest grade-point averages in their schools.

Inductees into the Academic Hall of Fame were singled out for special recognition. They are students whose grades qualified them for academic honors at each of the annual awards ceremonies during their entire school careers, from grades 5-12. Each of the inductees’ names will be engraved on special plaques to be displayed in their schools.

This year’s Academic Hall of Fame honorees from Tyler Consolidated High School included seniors Isabella Camerlin, Luke Daugherty, Remington Miller, Amanda Reynolds, Theodore Stackpole and Mark Wilson.

Academic Hall of Fame honorees from Paden City High School were Joshua Glover and Aubrey Neff.

Each of the Hall of Famers received a cash award from Peoples Bank — but one, Remington Miller, left the event significantly richer. Through a drawing, she was selected for a $1,000 scholarship from the bank.

Students at the ceremony for those in grades 9-12 were commended by Peoples Bank Senior Vice President Ann Helmick, who noted that many years ago, she was recognized at one of the awards ceremonies.

“You are being honored tonight because you have excelled in your adademics, because you have been on a path of investing in yourself,” Helmick told the students. “Don’t let the inevitable detours that come along in life discourage or derail you. Keep this momentum that you have today going …”

Those honored at the ceremony for grades 5-8 were urged by Peoples Bank Vice President Tracy Jensen to “work hard, follow your heart and don’t be afraid to stand out.”

“By being here this evening, we know that you already have the necessary elements that will make you a life-long learner — like hard work and determination,” Jensen noted.

Special guests honored during the ceremonies included Barbara Vincent, who helped establish the annual awards ceremonies 40 years ago; Tyler County Board of Education member Jimmy Wyatt and veteran retired school principal Lynn Caseman.

Master of ceremonies for the events was J. Michael Myer, executive editor of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register.

Invocations were provided by Paden City student Talan Chambers for the grades 5-8 ceremony and Tyler High student Luke Daugherty for the grades 9-12 event.

Entertainment was by the Tyler Consolidated High School Choir, directed by Bryce Negie, for the grades 5-8 ceremony; and the Tyler Consolidated High School Jazz Band, directed by Matt Jennings, for the grades 9-12 event.
