Mid-Ohio Valley Ballet Company is West Virginia’s first and only touring dance company, a nonprofit professional dance organization based in Parkersburg with Suzy Gunter as Artistic Director.

Each season the Nutcracker ballet is performed for more than 8,000 people through the company’s School Days Performing Arts Series for public, private and home-schooled children.

The curtain opens on the ballroom of the Von Stahlbaum family on Christmas Eve. Guests arrive and join in the dancing and merriment. The lights fade and the mysterious Drosslemeyers arrive. They bring gifts for the children and for Clara there is a nutcracker doll. Clara’s little brother becomes jealous and breaks the doll.

After the guests have departed and the ballroom is dark, Clara sneaks back downstairs to retrieve her nutcracker and finds a battle raging around the Christmas tree. The nutcracker doll has come to life and is fighting the mouse king. Clara strikes the mouse king with her slipper and the distraction allows the nutcracker to overcome him. Their leader down, the mice flee and the nutcracker is transformed into a prince. Clara and the prince journey to the “Land of the Sweets” where they are entertained with dances. It all ends with the final waltz of the snowflakes and Clara awakens from her dream.
