PARKERSBURG — The City of Parkersburg will celebrate the completion of the upgrades to the Southwood Park Slide at 5 p.m. Monday.
The celebration will include free pool admission and slide access for all attendees from 5:15-7 p.m.
According to a release from the city, the ceremony also honors the original vision of former Parkersburg Mayor Al Smith, who encouraged the expansion of Southwood Park as a hub for recreation and family fun.
“We’re proud to celebrate not only this wonderful park amenity, but also the legacy of Mayor Al Smith,” Mayor Tom Joyce said. “This project represents our commitment to investing in recreational spaces that bring our community together.”
Originally outlined in the City’s Capital Infrastructure Plan, the Public Works Department and Engineering Division collaborated to revitalize one of the community’s most enjoyed summertime attractions.
In 2023, Phase 1 of the Southwood Slide project was completed, focusing on resurfacing and rehabilitating the structure. Phase 2, initiated earlier this year, consisted of infrastructure upgrades to the site that included:
* Removal of all outdated facilities and infrastructure, including storm sewers, buildings and mechanical systems.
* Installation of a new concrete pool area with a zero-entry sloped entrance, modern decking, updated sidewalks and fencing.
* Construction of a prefabricated concrete restroom and equipment room, new mechanical equipment and electrical, water, and sewer improvements.
The total project cost was about $897,000 and was completed by a local contractor, United Construction Co. Inc.
