Act Swiftly: Smoot Theatres fills blank space on schedule with Taylor Swift tribute act

PARKERSBURG — Felice Jorgeson at the Smoot Theatre may not be a Swifty, but she hopes everyone else is.
“A Twist on Taylor: A Tribute to Taylor Swift,” the next big show at the theater, is unusual for the venue, an historic landmark in downtown Parkersburg, according to Jorgeson, a musician and former Parkersburg High School marching band director. The performance is at 7 p.m. Aug. 8.
“This is different for us,” Jorgeson said.
The show is more inclined to be popular toward a younger crowd than what the Smoot generally sees, Jorgeson said. Taylor Swift, the performer whose fans are called Swifties, is more recognizable to youth than older people and appeals more to that age group, she said.
“It’s for younger people than we are,” Jorgeson said.
Swift is portrayed by Sarah Jessica, a Texas native born and raised. Because of her resemblance to Taylor Swift and similar voice, she performed on “Country Superstars,” a long-running television show in Las Vegas where she now lives.
Jorgeson said she is trying to appeal to more audiences by booking the act.
“Just trying to do something different,” she said.
Another concern is the time of the show, 7 p.m., is an hour earlier than the usual curtain time of 8 p.m., Jorgeson said. The new time of 7 p.m. will be the schedule for the remainder of the series.
The change is to accommodate the older audiences who enjoy the Smoot performances, she said. At 8 p.m., the show ends after 10 p.m., Jorgeson said.
“They don’t like to get out much after dark,” she said.
Tickets for the show are $45 and can be purchased online at Smoottheatre.com. The show is not part of the regular Smoot series, Jorgeson said.
The series culminates on April 2 with Judy Collins, the Grammy-winning music legend whose hits included “Both Sides Now” and “Send in the Clowns.”
Other shows are:
* “Sail On: The Beach Boys Tribute,” Sept. 26.
* “The Linda Ronstadt Experience,” Oct. 18.
* “Portrait of Aretha” starring CeCe Teneal, Jan. 14.
* Good Shot Judy, March 7, a band performing classic swing.
All show times are at 7 p.m. and all ticket sales start at 10 a.m. Sept. 1 at Smoottheatre.com. The traditional pre-show receptions will be held at 6 p.m. in Wakley Hall adjacent to the theater on Fifth Street.
