Smoot youth ensembles to present free concert Sunday

PARKERSBURG — The Smoot Theatre Vocal Ensembles will present their final concert of the year at 3 p.m. Sunday in the theater at 213 Fifth St. in downtown Parkersburg.

The public is invited to the free concert, and donations are gratefully accepted.

The choral groups performing at the free concert are The Smoot Theatre Children’s Chorus, now in its 15th year, The Smoot Theatre Boys Ensemble, in its 13th year, and The Smoot Theatre Girls Ensemble, in its 10th year.

The Children’s Chorus will begin the concert with “Clap and Sing, Join Together!” followed by “Agnus Dei,” both by Victor Johnson. Next will be a new arrangement of “Yonder Come Day” with soloists Katie Henrichsen, Lyra Sams, Olivia Collins and Michael Lochard, followed by “The Hurricane” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” with soloists Madyson Lilly, Jonathan Brooks, Tyler Brooks, Shyanne Starkey and Layne Rem. They will close with “It’s Only a Paper Moon” and “Solfege Symphony.”

The Girls Ensemble will present “Sigh No More, Ladies,” by Ruth Morris Gray, with text by Shakespeare, followed by “Ubi Caritas” by Jonathan Reid and “Love Is Love Is Love Is Love” by Abbie Betinis. They will continue with “I’m Goin’ Up a Yonder” and “Bring Me Little Water, Silvy”, ending with “All Things New” by Elaine Hagenberg.

The Smoot Theatre Boys will bring to the concert stage a variety of music, including classical choral works such as “Cantate Domino” by Laura Farnell, “Rain Music” by American poet Joseph Cotter Jr., “Invenium Viam” and Frode Fjellheim’s “Night Yoik.”

In addition, the Fifth Street Boys will present “Pure Imagination” and the 1950’s hit, “Little Bitty, Pretty One.” The Boys Ensemble will conclude with a jazz medley of “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” and “Puttin’ On the Ritz” and a rendition of “John, The Slacker.” They will also combine with the Smoot Girls Ensemble in singing “Our Gift For You,” a tribute to parents, and a recognition of the groups’ 2025 graduating seniors.

To end the concert, all the ensembles will join to present their traditional closing song, “Why We Sing” by Greg Gilpin.

Director of the Children’s Chorus is Barbara Full, and accompanist is Marsha Parsons. The Girls Ensemble is directed by Cathy Martin, with accompanist Jane Irvine. Director of the Boys Ensemble is Janet Blessing, and accompanist is Kim Vineyard, with additional accompaniment by Scott Cain. Director of the Fifth Street Boys is Smoot Theatre Artistic Director Felice Jorgeson.
