Wood County Commission mulling funds for airport repairs
PARKERSBURG — The Wood County Commission is looking at a request from the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport for over $1 million to help with numerous repairs.
The Wood County Commission discussed the recent request from the airport for $1.4 million.
In a September letter to the commission, the airport’s leadership detailed a number of repairs needed on the property. Commissioner Bob Tebay is on the airport authority board.
The airport’s request was for $291,461 to repair the Hangar 4 roof, $447,633 for the renovation of the interior of Hangar 4 to include black mold mitigation, restoration of office space and replacement of restrooms. They requested $2,962 for a new hangar door.
The letter said the hangar was down from five to two airplanes in the hangar due to birds relieving themselves on the planes. Officials said Hangar 4 is one of the older buildings at the airport.
There is also a request for $185,953 to repair the roof in the old terminal and S7,800 to do fiber optic work to that building to make it more viable to rent to businesses in the future. Airport officials also want $395,000 to do an erosion control project on the grounds.
The commission agreed unanimously to send the request to their attorneys at the law firm of Lewis and Glasser who they hired to review requests for funding from the $16.2 million the county received in American Recovery Act funds. The law firm was hired to make sure the projects meet the legal definition of what the money can be used for.
The money has to be obligated by the end of 2024 and spent by the end of 2026, officials said.
Tebay said he will see if he can get the airport to send the commission updated costs estimates on all the repairs.
He is concerned the more they wait, the more expensive the project will grow.
“I don’t think anything is going to get cheaper and that is my concern,” Tebay said.
In other business, the commission reappointed Jean Ambrose and Peggy Squires to the Wood County Parks and Recreation Commission.
