Parkersburg Catholic goes 1-1 during tri

MARIETTA -- Marietta High owned the whip hand on the volleyball court.
The Tigers swept both Parkersburg Catholic and Meigs High in a best-of-3 tri-meet Monday night at Sutton Gymnasium.
Marietta (12-5) downed PCHS (9-2-1) 25-21 and 25-18 and the Marauders (3-13) 25-15 and 25-6.
Catholic defeated Meigs 25-22 and 25-11.
"Parkersburg Catholic is a scrappy team and well-coached," said Marietta head coach Ron Kidder. "I give them that. They came and played hard.
"As for us, we just need to play more solid and consistent."
Against Catholic, Marietta was led by hitters' Sydney Wright and Hannah Kroft, who finished with seven and six kills, respectively. Setter Kaitlyn McClead had 12 assists and seven digs.
"We passed the ball well," Kidder said. "That helped us a lot, so we could attack the ball.
"We also had solid all-around hitting. Everybody got their share of hits in."
The Crusaderettes were paced by Madison Ross' dozen kills. Setter Jenna Boice had 20 assists, and libero Gracie Lowers, a Shepherd University recruit, finished with 14 digs.
"It took us a couple of minutes to get going and of course unforced errors didn't help any," said Catholic boss Amanda Weatherwax.
"Overall, I think we get better every time we play them (Tigers). Marietta's a good team and always are.
"I'm proud of the way we came back. We didn't give up. It was an exciting game. I'm glad we can bring our girls up here and get the experience. Hopefully, it'll help us out later on in our season."
The Crusaderettes bounced back after losing to Marietta and took two from Meigs.
PCHS was led by Grace Wojcik's five kills; Boice's 13 assists; and Lowers' 11 digs.
"Gracie is a senior and she's all over the floor," Weatherwax said.
Meigs setter Bre Zirkle finished with 20 assists.
In the final match of the evening, Marietta was a 10-point winner over the Marauders in the first set, and then trailed 5-0 early in the second game before posting a 25-1 run.
The Tigers were led by Kroft's 12 kills; McClead's 17 assists; and libero Maddy Muntz's seven digs.
Marietta is scheduled to host Meadowbrook at 5:30 p.m. tonight for Senior Night at Sutton Gym. Brooke Copenhaver, Alexus Carpenter, Jillian Middleton, Betsy Wriston, McClead, and Kroft will all be recognized.
