PHS runs past rival South

PARKERSBURG–Even with his Parkersburg softball team scoing eight runs in the second inning, Big Reds head coach Jason Robers wants his Big Reds to score more runs throughout the game, instead of relying on big run innings.

The monster inning proved enough in a 10-5 win against Parkersburg South, but cold bats late against other teams may cost Parkersburg.

“We only scored two more times, we need more consistency,” Roberts said, “We have good hitters not to do score more, I’d rather have 2-3 runs an inning.”

Starting pitchers Kenzie Riddle and Ashlee Ellison got opposing batters to go down in order in the first, but Ellison would be the first to give up runs.

The Big Reds loaded the bases up staring with Emily Allen sending a line drive passed third basemen Kelly Amos and Ellison later walked Janna Yost and Riddle.

Consecutive singles by Maggie Sauers, Sydney Bohn and Maddi Leggett sent their teammates across the plate.

Hitting a second time in the second, Allen hit an RBI double and Yost brought in two more with a single.

Yost was the last batter Ellison would face as Patriots head coach Tim Burch called Zoe Wells from the bullpen.

Wells got Sauers to pop up to Amos for the finally out of the second.

The Patriots responded in the bottom of the second with Paige Adams doubling on the first pitch she saw. She later scored due Haley Hatfield’s double.

“We were able to bounce back quickly when playing another team, but you can’t do that against a team as good as we played tonight,” Parkersburg South head coach Tim Burch later said that this loss could be a good thing for his side.

“We have been beating teams handily and having fun doing that. We needed a game where we can’t just show up and play and would wake us up.”

Bohn single and once again make it an eight-run lead off Kisten Roberts grounder in the third.

Riddle struggled in the bottom of the fourth, allowing four runs and walking three Patriots, her only walks of the game

Sauers RBI single at the top of the fourth was the last run of the game as Riddle picked up the win and pitched a complete game.

Frustrating Patriots hitters all evening, only striking out two batters in seven innings of work, Riddle got her outs another way.

Getting 12 Patriots to fly out

“Kenize is resilient, she went through a lot last year, she has a pretty good changeup so that makes it difficult for hitters,” Roberts said. “She is tough and she’s one of our favorites. She going to fight through everything.”

PHS receives little time to relish the victory over their rival as the team travels to South Charleston at 5:30 p.m. today. South hits the road for a challenging matchup with Cabell Midland at noon Thursday.
