Paden City, Doddridge boys win in double-OT; Ravenswood, Wirt also advance in sectional play

BOYS BASKETBALL

Paden City 69, Magnolia 68 (2 OTs)

NEW MARTINSVILLE -- Matt Saxon's two free-throws with three-tenths of a second left in the game lifted Paden City to a 69-68, double-overtime victory against Magnolia Saturday in a Class A sectional tournament opener.

Foul shooting proved to be the difference at the end of the game as Magnolia made just 3 of 8 free-throw attempts in both overtimes, while the Wildcats made all nine of their freebies.

Trey Slider scored a team-high 24 points for Paden City, which plays St. Marys on Tuesday. Saxon added 15, Ty Cain netted nine and Jason Anderson and Anthony Newman tacked on eight apiece.

Magnolia (5-15) got a game-best 31 points from Jake Gamble. Trevor Williamson and Trent Scheibelhood both added 12.

Wirt County 70, Wahama 47

ELIZABETH -- Wirt County took care of business in the opening round of sectional play Saturday, defeating Wahama 70-47.

Justin Windland scored 19 points to lead the Tigers, who improve to 12-11 and visit Williamstown in the semifinals Tuesday. Kyler Carper added 14 points, Nathan Murray netted 11, Seth Suslick tallied nine and Hunter Hickman tacked on eight for Wirt.

Wahama was led by Jacob Lloyd's 17 points. Abram Pauley added 15 for the White Falcons.

Ravenswood 44, Calhoun County 40

MT. ZION -- Ravenswood slowed things down and came away with a 44-40 victory over Calhoun County in a sectional tournament opener.

Devin Raines led all scorers with 21 points. Ravenswood, who also got 12 points from Nick Westenhaver, led 11-7 after a quarter, 18-17 at halftime and 33-31 going into the fourth. Calhoun was led by Adam Parsons' 13 points. Trevor Carder added 12 and Hayden Richards netted nine. Carder finished his prep career with 980 points.

Ravenswood (6-17) visits Parkersburg Catholic Tuesday in a sectional semifinal while Calhoun finished its season with an 8-15 record.

Doddridge County 68, Clay-Battelle 62 (2 OTs)

WEST UNION -- A double-overtime thriller ended in Doddridge County's favor Saturday as the Bulldogs bested Clay-Battelle 68-62.

Doddridge trailed 26-22 at halftime but outscored Clay-Battelle 12-10 in the third and 15-13 in the fourth to force OT. Both teams scored six in the first overtime before the Bulldogs went on an 11-7 run in the second to claim the victory.

Tanner Lett led Doddridge 21 points and also posted nine rebounds. Connor Cunningham added 20 points and a whopping 25 rebounds. Griffin Devericks chipped in nine points, three assists, and three steals while Holden Hayes tacked on nine points and three dimes.

Clay-Battelle (10-12) was paced by Levi Carrico's 22 points. Colton Barr added 20 while Seth Casino netted 14.

Doddridge (8-15) pays a visit to top-seeded Notre Dame Tuesday in a sectional semifinal.
