Williamstown 83, Braxton County 62
GLENVILLE -- Aside from scoring his 1,000th career point here Saturday night at Glenville State College's Waco Center, Williamstown's Cullen Cutright had game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the No. 8 Yellowjackets to an 83-62 victory versus Braxton County in the Little Kanawha Conference Night of Champions consolation affair.
Tied 34-all at intermission, Eli Inman's deuce from a Trent Lynch assist gave WHS the lead for good just 13 ticks into the third. Cutright, who capped the third with a jam, scored 10 straight points and it was 52-40 after consecutive treys from Boston Caruthers.
Williamstown, now 16-5 with a road game left Tuesday at Calhoun County, also got double figures from Inman (13), Boston Caruthers and Xavier Caruthers with 12 apiece. Lynch tallied all 11 of his in the fourth quarter, including the first five of the period as the 'Jackets led 63-50 with 6:15 remaining.
The Yellowjackets shot 74 percent (20 of 27) after the break.
Jadyn Stewart paced the 9-12 Eagles, who play host Thursday to Philip Barbour, with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and a game-high three steals. Blaine Cogar added 16 points in the setback.
Dublin-Coffman 84, Parkersburg South 69
DUBLIN, Ohio -- Seth Fallon scored a career-high 29 points in Parkersburg South's 84-69 loss to Ohio Division I second-ranked Dublin-Coffman Saturday.
Fallon was 10 for 16 from the floor and finished with eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Malaki Sylvia added 16 points while Jake Dennis netted 10 for the Patriots, who dropped to 6-14 and play host to South Charleston Tuesday for Senior Night.
The Shamrocks (21-1) got 23 points from Dominic Penn, 17 from Luke Bartimus, 13 from Will Hunter and nine from Evan James.
The Patriots led 19-7 after a quarter but the 'Rocks came roaring back to tie things at 28-all at halftime. South was outscored 30-19 in the third and 26-22 in the fourth.
The Patriots shots 55.3 percent (26 for 47) from the floor while Dublin-Coffman was 53.8 percent (28 for 52).
Lincoln County 54, Ripley 53
RIPLEY -- Lincoln County edged Ripley 54-53 Saturday.
Ripley led 22-21 at halftime but was outscored 19-9 in the third quarter as Lincoln County took control. The Vikings won the fourth quarter, 22-15, but it wasn't quite enough.
Ty Johnson (23 points, 15 rebounds) and Isaac Putnam (13 points, 11 rebounds) both produced double-doubles for Ripley. Isaiah Riffe added six points and eight boards.
Lincoln County got 16 points from Coy Garretson, 12 from Kadin Becheimer, nine from Hunter Hill, eight from John Blankenship and seven from Tanner Walls in the win.
Wood County Christian 56, Mercer Christian 54
SUMMERSVILLE -- Wood County Christian capped its 2018-19 season on a winning note, defeating Mercer Christian 56-54 Saturday in a West Virginia Christian Athletic Tournament consolation game.
Sam Cremeans hit a pair of free-throws with 3.6 seconds left in the game to put the Wildcats (12-13) up by two. Mercer Christian's desperation heave at the buzzer was off the mark to secure the win for the Dan Morris-coached squad.
Cremeans led the way with 28 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Camden Huck and Garrett Napier added nine points apiece while Ryder Davis chipped in seven boards.
Mercer Christian (22-7) was paced by Eric Boothe's 23 markers. Devin Shrewsburg tallied 11 and Jamison Mullins tacked on nine.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Fairfield Union 38, Warren 30
WELLSTON, Ohio -- After beating Fairfield Union twice in the regular season, Warren High fell to the Falcons 38-30 in a Division II sectional final Saturday at Wellston High School.
Warren (11-9) mustered just two points in the first quarter and trailed 10-2 after eight minutes. The Warriors cut the deficit to four by halftime, but Fairfield Union (13-10) converted on 16 of 21 free-throw attempts in the game and used the foul line to keep Warren from rallying. Olivia Alloway's 3-pointer midway through the fourth had Warren within one, 29-28, but the Falcons outscored the Warriors 9-2 the rest of the way.
Abbie Smith led the Warriors with eight points. Molly Grayson added seven and Millie Ryan tallied six.
Fairfield Union will play Circleville at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at Southeasten High School in a district semifinal.
Class A Region I, Section 2
No. 4 St. Marys 60, No. 5 Paden City 31
ST. MARYS -- Kylie Wright's 24-point, 10-rebound double-double helped lift fourth-seeded St. Marys past fifth-seeded Paden City 60-31 in a Class A, Region I, Section 2 tournament game Saturday.
The Blue Devils (13-10) now will play top-seeded Magnolia at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the sectional semifinal.
Addie Furr netted eight points for St. Marys while Josey Moore added six points, five steals and five assists.
St. Marys led 12-9 after a quarter and stretched its lead to 10, 27-17, by halftime. Paden City (9-13) managed just 14 second-half points as St. Marys pulled away.
Paige Leonard scored 13 points for the Wildcats while Raven Fulks tallied seven.
Kenmore-Garfield 51, Marietta 49
AKRON, Ohio -- The Marietta High girls came up just short in a 51-49 loss to Kenmore-Garfield in Saturday's sectional opener.
The Tigers got a game-high 21 points from Morgan Altenburger, 10 from Jennifer Smith and six apiece from Adi Hill, Tia Jarvis and Hannah Kroft.
I'Anna Lopp led the hosts with 18 points while Alexis Radcliff added 11.
Marietta held a 14-13 lead after a quarter but Kenmore-Garfield rallied for a 27-20 halftime advantage. The Tigers' deficit grew to 16, 45-29, going into the fourth, where Marietta outscored Kenmore-Garfield 20-6 but fell just shy of completing the comeback.
Class A Region II, Section 1
Gilmer County 53, Doddridge County 52
GLENVILLE -- Gilmer County escaped with a 53-52 win over Doddridge County Saturday in a sectional tournament opener.
The Titans (17-6) needed a fourth-quarter comeback after trailing 43-39 through three quarters. Down 52-51 with eight seconds left, Hannah Grove sank a pair of foul shots to give Gilmer the victory.
Grace Wellings led the Titans with 15 points while Grove added 14 and Trinity Bancroft netted 10.
Doddridge was led by Cameron Smith's game-high 19 points. Rylee Spurlock chipped in 12 while Bianca Howell tacked on eight for the Bulldogs.
Up next for Gilmer is a sectional semifinal against either South Harrison or Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
