BOYS BASKETBALL

University 89, Parkersburg South 76

MORGANTOWN — KJ McClure and Kaden Matheny combined for 53 points as University took an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference matchup, 89-76, from Parkersburg South Friday night.

The Hawks’ 10-point advantage after one period of play ballooned to 22 at halfime as the Patriots struggled to keep pace. The fourth quarter was the only period on the evening Mike Fallon’s crew outscored their hosts (25-15).

Brayden Mooney paced South with 23 markers and 8 rebounds. Jake Dennis finished as the second leading scorer with 10 markers. One game after scoring 29, Malaki Sylvia was held to 8 points.

Fallon’s group shot 52 percent from the field, but University bested them with a 59-percent effort.

Spring Valley 63, Ripley 58

RIPLEY — Ty Johnson contributed 17 points, 12 rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists against Spring Valley Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings fell 63-58.

Ripley shot 52 percent (23 for 44) from the floor in the contest to just 36 percent (20 for 55) for Spring Valley. However, the Vikings made only eight of their 17 free-throw attempts and committed 20 turnovers to Spring Valley’s 10.

CJ Meredith led all scorers, tallying 25 for the winners. Ohio State football commit Doug Nester recorded a 10-point, eight-rebound performance while Brock Booth and Graeson Malashevich netted nine points apiece.

For Ripley, Isaac Putnam scored a team-high 20 points. Tobias Scholl added eight.

Roane at Calhoun PPD

MT. ZION — Due to the flu bug hitting the Calhoun County basketball team, Wednesday’s home game versus Roane County had to be postponed. The game will be made up on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Calhoun County 47, Doddridge County 41

WEST UNION — Kaylin Parsons threw up a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds that helped Calhoun County to another LKC East win, 47-41, over host Doddridge County Wednesday.

Madison Dennis joined her teammate in double-digit scoring with 10 points. Katie Jones pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds for the Red Devils along with her seven points.

Courtney Smith (12) and Jonna Ferrell (11) paced the Bulldogs.

Everything went Doddridge County’s way until the third quarter. The Bulldogs’ four-point effort to a dozen markers from Calhoun County erased a 20-13 halftime lead.

Red Devils’ scorers made sure their lead stayed intact with a 22-17 edge in the final period of play.

Parkersburg Catholic 63, Gilmer County 32

GLENVILLE — Wednesday’s game between Gilmer County and visiting Parkersburg Catholic was all knotted up at 11-11 after one quarter.

However, it was all Catholic from there as the Crusaderettes rolled to a 63-32 victory. Catholic (14-1)outscored Gilmer (11-3) 18-7 in the second quarter to take a 29-18 lead into halftime. The Crusaderettes then out-pointed the Titans 34-14 in the second half.

Leslie Huffman scored 16 points while Madeline Huffman added 15 for Catholic, which visits Notre Dame Monday. Paige Shutts added nine points for the victors.

Gilmer ws led by Lindsay Chapman’s eight points. The Titans visit Clay County Friday.

Tyler Consolidated 56, South Harrison 27

KIDWELL — JoLee Walton led all scorers with 17 points to help Tyler Consolidated defeat South Harrison 56-27 Wednesday.

Walton also grabbed six rebounds, as did Regan Smith and Miranda Weekly. Josey Jones netted 12 points while Peyton Kocher finished with 12 points and four steals.

The Silver Knights, now 8-8, visit St. Marys today.
