WAVERLY -- A home in Waverly was a total loss following a fire Tuesday evening.
The Waverly Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call at 1168 Carpenter Run Road at 7:41 p.m., said Captain Chip Umspot of the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department.
The owners were home at the time at the two-story home built around 1945 when one of them noticed a glow outside and realized the house was on fire, Umspot said.
"The roof and second floor were fully involved when we arrived on scene," he said. "Flames were coming out of the roof."
The residents were able to evacuate the house quickly and no injuries were reported. They are currently staying with family, he said.
The Deerwalk Volunteer Fire Department, the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department, the St. Marys Volunteer Fire Department and the Belmont Volunteer Fire Department also responded with mutual aid.
Being in a rural area, water had to be trucked to the site as each department responded with their tanker trucks, Umspot said.
There were 34 firefighters on the scene Tuesday evening as well as crews from St. Joseph Ambulance Service.
Crews did both exterior and interior attacks on the fire, Umspot said. Crews had the fire out around 9:22 p.m. and worked on mopping up hotspots, Umspot said. Crews cleared the scene at 11:22 p.m.
Due to the amount of water being used and freezing conditions, the West Virginia Department of Highways came out and treated the roadway so traffic could get through, Umspot said.
The fire is still under investigation to make a final determination, but it is believed to have been centered around the chimney area.
"This was just unfortunate," Umspot said. "It was a devastating loss for the residents."
The house was ruled a total loss.
No injuries were reported among fire crews.
