Vacant Ravenswood home likely destroyed after fire

RAVENSWOOD -- Fire crews in Ravenswood responded to a fire at a vacant house on Washington Street Sunday afternoon.
Fire crews from the Ravenswood Volunteer Fire Department and the Silverton Volunteer Fire Department were alerted at 4:20 p.m. Sunday to a residential structure fire on Washington Street across from the old Copes Supermarket, according to a post on the Ravenswood Volunteer Fire Department's Facebook page.
"Units arrived on scene within minutes of being dispatched out with Ravenswood (Police Department) being the first to arrive on scene and gave us a size up with heavy smoke and flames coming out of the front of the structure," the post said.
Lt. Dennis Rash of the Ravenswood Volunteer Fire Department said no one was in the home at the time and fire officials were told no one was living there.
"We were told no one was (supposed) to be in the residence at the time," he said.
The Facebook post said the first engine arrived on scene and deployed two sections of attack lines to attempt control of the blaze. The fire had rapidly spread through the residence.
Rash said they first attempted to enter through the front door and got pushed out by the heat, forcing them to move to an exterior attack.
"At one point, we did make it in for a brief time,'' he said.
However, the conditions were deemed unsafe for them to continue inside and they backed out, got the fire under control and were finally were able to get back into the structure, deal with the remaining hot spots, Rash said.
Crews were on the scene until 8:32 p.m. Sunday.
Ravenswood responded with 10 firefighters and Silverton responded with five or six. Crews responded with three engines, two small rescue vehicles and one ladder truck.
There were no injuries reported among the fire crews.
The residence is believed to be a total loss.
A cause of the fire has not been determined yet, Rash said.
The West Virginia Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
