Body sent for autopsy after truck plunges into river

PARKERSBURG — The body of a woman was found Monday morning in a pickup truck that went into the Little Kanawha River, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department reported.

A call came in around 11 a.m. of a vehicle that went into the water at the end of Leachtown Lane, off Route 47, said Lt. R.A. George of the Wood County Sheriff’s Department.

The East Wood Volunteer Fire Department responded and found what it believed was the vehicle, a Dodge Dakota pickup truck, George said. The Little Hocking Volunteer Fire Department responded with its dive team, located the truck and was able to hook it so a wrecker could pull it out of the water.

The female driver was found deceased inside the truck. A member of the Wood County Crash Team was on the scene investigating.

George said they were not releasing the name of the driver yet, giving time for the family to contact other family members.

The investigation was close to wrapping up, George said, adding it will be up to the coroner if an autopsy is performed.

Wood County Coroner Mike St. Clair said the body was being sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston for an autopsy.

The sheriff’s department was not releasing the cause of the accident yet, but George said foul play was not suspected.
