PARKERSBURG -- The Parkersburg Fire Department answered three fire calls Wednesday, including an arson on 20th Street.
Two city firefighters were working on a pre-fire plan at First Lutheran Church on 19th Street when they smelled smoke coming from a nearby garage apartment at 1704 1/2 20th St., across the alley from the church, said Capt. Brian Drake of the Parkersburg Fire Department. The fire was discovered around 5:20 p.m.
Drake said the fire in the kitchen was intentionally set. Police were called to the scene and were looking for a suspect Wednesday night, Drake said.
Drake estimated the damage at $20,000. Sixteen firefighters responded to the call. The apartment owner's name was unavailable.
A second fire occurred around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at 1106 30th St. in Parkersburg.
The two-store frame house was occupied at the time of the fire, Drake said. No one was injured.
The fire started in the basement, Drake said. A cause had not been determined Wednesday. Smoke and flames were in the basement when firefighters arrived, Drake said.
The fire appears to be accidental, Drake said. Sixteen firefighters responded to the call.
The third incident was a small grass fire at 4:18 p.m. Wednesday at Rayon Drive and Edison Hill Drive, Drake said. Firefighters extinguished the fire.
