Belpre celebrates with homecoming events

BELPRE -- The main streets of Belpre were bustling with people enjoying the last day of homecoming weekend.
Saturday morning kicked off with many events, such as the Buddy Bass Fishing Tournament, Kids Fishing Derby, Belpre Mile Run and Walk and Belpre Homecoming Parade.
The parade, which lasted around an hour and a half, attracted hundreds of people from throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley with the floats, horses and, of course, candy.
"I have been looking forward to the parade," said Bailey Bryant, 7, of Belpre, who was enjoying the parade with her family.
According to Phil Gillian, a member of the Frontier Bass Masters Club, who were in charge of both fishing derbies, there was close to 100 kids who fished in Saturday's derby.
"There were many good size fish caught, one girl caught a seven pound catfish," Gillian said.
"Overall it looked as though everyone had a great time," he said.
According to Gillian, the fishing derbies have been a popular part of the Belpre Homecoming Festival for more than 10 years.
Saturday continued to be a hit into the afternoon, with the Puppy Pageant taking place at noon, with over 20 dogs and their owners participating.
The dogs were separated into four categories, then judged based on outfit, tricks and funny stories the owners shared.
Desolae Anderson, of Portland, Ohio, said her dog Junior, who won second place in the large breed category, is fiercely loyal, and that is something she loves most about him.
For the last day of Homecoming, the rides opened at noon, attracting those who had yet to visit.
"This is our first time here," said Kat Hubley, who was enjoying the slides with her 3-year-old daughter Olivia Owens.
"Olivia really seems to like the slides," Hubley said.
The activities at the Belpre Homecoming concluded Saturday evening with the Miss Teen and Miss Belpre pageants, a concert by Stallion and the Light Up the Night laser light show.

* First: Breanna Leasure, with a 7 pound 10 ounce fish
