PARKERSBURG -- The World Karate Union Hall of Fame honored martial artists from the Parkersburg area recently in Tannersville, Pa.
Grandmaster Paul Snider, 10th degree black belt, received two awards, including one for "Man of Honor." Snider gives classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. at the Parkersburg YMCA.
The World Karate Union also honored six additional black belts from this area, Sensei Tom Anderson, Richard Davis, Brayden Lucas, Gavin Rockhold, Keith Pecora II and Dr. Richard Newhart, with membership certifications. In order to become a member of the World Karate Union, nominees have a black belt rank, show excellence to the field of Karate, and be nominated by a higher degree person in the society.
The World Karate Union Hall of Fame was established 24 years ago and is one of the oldest ongoing international Karate events in the United States, according to a press release. Worldwide members are selected for devotion and excellence to the martial arts.
The tournament raises money for Toys for Tots, and has raised over $50,000 for that cause, officials said. This year's meeting included individuals from Trinidad, West Africa, Great Britain and Kurdistan, Iraq.
