PARKERSBURG -- People can enjoy the first day of pool season in Parkersburg and check out the new splash pad at City Park free of charge on Friday.
There will be no admission charge for the pools at City and Southwood Parks -- or their accompanying features, the splash pad and water slide, respectively -- from noon to 6 p.m.
At 11:30 a.m., the city will hold a grand opening celebration for the splash pad. The event is open to the public and will include city leadership, representatives from Hunt Valley Contractors that installed the splash pad and children who attended the groundbreaking in September. Each family at the City Park Pool Friday will have a chance to win a free family summer pool pass, according to a release from the city.
The $1.3 million splash pad was paid for with about $900,000 in city funds and $410,000 in contributions from the Spartan Foundation, McDonough Foundation, Ross Foundation, Highmark West Virginia, Sisters Health Foundation and Parkersburg Area Community Foundation. It was accompanied by nearly $455,000 in improvements at the pool, including a new concession stand, concrete and other features.
A pair of new pergolas will provide additional shade at Southwood Park this summer.
Along with Parkersburg's facilities, pools in Williamstown and Devola will open Friday, with Vienna's pool following on Saturday.
Pools in Belpre, Marietta, Beverly, Lowell and St. Marys already opened, drawing swimmers on Memorial Day weekend.
The hours for area pools are as follows:
∫ Belpre -- Open, noon to 6 p.m. daily.
∫ Beverly-Waterford -- Open, noon to 5 p.m. daily.
∫ Devola -- Opens Friday, noon to 7 p.m. daily.
∫ Lowell -- Open, noon to 6 p.m. daily.
∫ Marietta Aquatic Center -- Open, noon to 6 p.m. daily, noon to 8 p.m. Friday.
∫ Parkersburg, City and Southwood Parks -- Open Friday, noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
∫ St. Marys -- Open, 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 1-6 p.m. Sunday.
∫ Vienna -- Opens Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 7-9 p.m. Friday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
∫ Williamstown -- Opens Friday, noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 7-9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 1-6 p.m. Sunday.
