PARKERSBURG -- One person was injured in a shooting incident in Parkersburg over the weekend.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Wood County Magistrate Court, Tyler Shawn Garner, 22, of 1210 Broadway Ave., discharged a handgun in his residence around 12:10 p.m. Saturday. The bullet traveled through the door of the house and into a passing vehicle, striking the driver in the head, the complaint says.

Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin said it appears Garner was setting the gun on a table.

"As he was doing that, his finger touched the trigger and it went off," he said.

"It's just a wrong-place, wrong-time" situation, Martin said. "But fortunately for him (the driver) and the passenger, they were both spared serious injury."

Garner was charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, arraigned in Magistrate Court and released on a $1,000 surety bond.

Martin said anyone handling a gun should remember the cardinal rule of treating any weapon as if it is loaded. People who are not proficient in firearms can learn proper handling by seeking out a certified instructor, he said.
