Mural planned for Parkersburg floodwall

By Madeline Scarborough 3 min read

PARKERSBURG -- A new floodwall mural is among plans for beautification of downtown Parkersburg for this year, Wendy Shriver, executive director for Downtown PKB, said at Wednesday's annual meeting.

"Edward Escandon and Chris Santer have come up with a rendering for a mural on the river side of the floodwall," Shriver said.

Shriver said the two men approached Downtown PKB and the city of Parkersburg for design approval and to help with getting started in mid-2018.

"We have a subcommittee working on sponsorship opportunities now," Shriver said.

Shriver said the mural design has been approved by the city and Downtown PKB, and they hope to have it started this year.

"The mural will be done in phases and sections," Shriver said.

"I am really looking forward to the finished product," she said.

Other beautification projects those exploring downtown Parkersburg will begin to notice are the selfie stations.

"There are a few already up across the street from the art center," Shriver said.

Shriver said Downtown PKB is accepting art designs now for more selfie stations to go up on the side of the Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau building with the theme of "Rolling on the River."

"This is one of the ways we hope to incorporate local art into downtown," she said.

Chairman Lindsay Anderson said Downtown PKB is focusing on the design, historical preservation and continued beautification of the downtown for this year.

Also discussed at the Downtown PKB annual meeting:

* The terms for board members Larry Johnson, John Nicholson, Chuck Hughes and Jami Board were to run out this year, and they were all voted back on for another term.

* The 2019 officers were voted in. President is Lindsey Piersol, vice president is Bill Niday, treasurer is John Nicholson and secretary is Larry Johnson.

The Community Spirit Awards were distributed at Wednesday's meeting.

* Person of the Year was Christian Wilcox, president of the Parkersburg Chapter Jaycees.

* Business of the Year was Unity Cafe.

* Curb appeal was tied between Trinity Episcopal Church and the Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Shriver also announced that with a grant from the Wood County Solid Waste Authority they added 10 new flower pots and five new trash/recycling receptacles that were adopted by individuals and businesses.

"The Downtown PKB puts on nine events a year, and none of that would be possible without all of our community support," Shriver said.

"So much of our success is due to the dedication and leadership of our board of directors, investments from our partners and all of our event sponsors and loyal volunteers," she said.
