Mother sentenced to time served on child neglect charge

9-month-old died of apparent overdose

PARKERSBURG — A woman charged in the 2016 death of her 9-month-old daughter from a fentanyl overdose was sentenced Thursday to time served.

Amanda Adorante, aka Amanda Story, 26, was not at the home when her daughter came into contact with the drug, defense attorney Courtney Ahlborn said before Wood County Circuit Court Judge J.D. Beane pronounced the sentence.

“The evidence would show Ms. (Adorante) was the least culpable in this case of the three defendants,” Ahlborn said.

Adorante was originally indicted on a charge of child neglect resulting in death, along with the child’s father Jason Lee Story, 39, and grandmother, Kimberly Story, 59. All three pleaded guilty to child neglect creating substantial risk of injury, a lesser included misdemeanor offense.

Kimberly Story was sentenced to time served in October. Jason Story’s sentencing on the child neglect charge and a felony count of second-degree robbery in a separate case is scheduled for 9 a.m. today.

Adorante told the judge she should have ended the relationship with Jason Story sooner.

“I feel like if I would have left sooner and stayed away, my daughter would still be here today,” she said.

“She was just my little angel, and I loved her very much,” Adorante said.

Ahlborn requested the sentence be for time served or, barring that, probation. Assistant Prosecutor Lora Snodgrass said Adorante has complied with court requirements in this case and another in which she regained custody of her son. However, she still requested probation “just to get some extra supervision,” saying the case was an example of a failure by all parties involved to care for the child.

Beane sentenced Adorante to the two days in jail and 100 days of home confinement she’d already served.

“Good luck to you,” he said as Adorante left the courtroom.
