PARKERSBURG — A 4-year-old Washington Bottom boy saved his allowance for a year and donated half of it to the Washington Bottom Fire Department.

Bentley Clark Sherman made the piggy bank in the shape of a fire house at a Home Depot workshop for kids in 2017 during Christmas time, Assistant Fire Chief Brian Dailey said.

He saved his allowance until recently when he donated $7.69, half of it, to the fire department.

Bentley was brought to the fire department by his grandfather, Daniel Sherman. His uncle, Mark Johnson, used to be a Washington Bottom firefighter, which played a part in Bentley’s decision to donate the money.

“The $7.69 that Bentley donated was a much bigger gift than the actual dollar amount,” Dailey said. “It will be placed in the fire department’s account and will indeed be used to help the firefighters.

“With any luck, young Bentley will grow up and join our fire department some day,” Dailey said. “We’d be proud to have him on our team.”
