Pen pals gather at Parkersburg South

PARKERSBURG -- Pen pals from two area schools gathered Thursday at Parkersburg South High School to celebrate the holiday season.
Students in Cheryl Olcott's Advanced Communication 3 class at PSHS met with Sherry Morris' second grade class from Martin Elementary School, the first time the pen pals have met face-to-face this year.
"They have been writing notes and making cards since August," Olcott said. "The high school students made name plates for their pen pals so they could locate their tables. Each student wrote a letter to Santa and decorated a cookie."
The annual holiday event included a canned food drive for the South Patriot Pantry, with the elementary students collecting 191 cans of food as part of their Kindness Hat Day.
The students also received a visit from Santa Claus and had their photos taken.
"I was very happy when I saw my pen pal yesterday. They look up to you even if they do not know you very well," said South student Brett Hearn. "They just like having a big buddy."
"We had so much fun talking and decorating cookies together," said South student Bri Jones. "Anything we talked about, her whole face would light up and her eyes would shimmer. I really enjoyed talking and listening to her."
